I'll keep this open.  Certain threads talk about special drumsticks and how to choose drumsticks and what drumsticks do we use...  But this thread is specifically focused on Ahead drumsticks, so I'll allow this.  Thanks for the concern, guys!

For more Ahead drumstick info, you can check out the other drumstick-related threads in this Forum.  There are a number of talks about Aheads in this forum.  Just keep browsing around.

Drumming equipment are so diverse nowadays, and new drumming products always come out of the market.  We drummers never run out of things to check out and talk about.

And yes...  One of my Ahead sticks did broke down.  Hehehe!  :P

Post by: MacoySIN on September 27, 2006, 02:53:36 AM
ive had 3 pairs of ahead joey jordisons, my first pair lasted until now pero nawala yung isa, my second pair was sold, then my third pair broke last week, both piece in one day but ive used it for over a month. the core is made of aluminum alloy, very light pero hollow yung loob, then the outer material is some kind of plastic. the outer material or the so called taper is what gives them their weight. yung looks nya panalo talaga pero malayo talaga sya sa wood sticks. kung ako tatanungin mas gusto ko yung wood. yung aheads kasi maganda kapag bago, then after a week or two medyo pangit na. and medyo mahina yung attack nya compared sa wood, medyo dull sya sa cymbals lalo na sa ride kung gagamitin mo yung tip. sa feel naman, medyo maninibago ka, hindi sya matalbog sa drums tulad ng wood sticks. and they get worse as they wear out. another downside is walang available tapers dito sa atin, and mahal pa yung aheads.

Title: ahead convert...
Post by: johanncalabig on September 28, 2006, 08:55:18 PM
Hey... I just want to share my experience with ahead. I have been using my first pair of ahead 7a drumsticks for 3 years now. I play a varied type of music from rock to jazz. Pero mostly rock and medium-heavy hitting. So far in 3 years di pa ko na down ng sticks na to. (I've been favoring vic firths and tama sticks for 10 years until I discovered the joys and benefits of ahead.)
Isa pang good benefit of ahead is less strain sa palm/wrist dahil reduced ang vibration.
I've seen bad reviews about this na madali daw mabaluktot. In my opinion, nasa user technique yun.

One comment lang sa sticks na to. Its not so good for jazz. Yung 7A nila masyado pa ring mabigat. for jazz i still would recommend wood/wood tip.

I want you to know that using Ahead sticks lessens the stick definition when using the tip...especially when riding.

And when using the shaft, the crispiness is also deadened.

Plus, if you do not use the covers for quite a while, it becomes crispy and cracks easily.

Yo JP!

I think the AHEAD sticks are not for everybody.  But if it's available locally, I think it will sell really well.  I realized that drumsticks are a big issue amongst us Pinoy drummers (cost, durability, reliability etc.).  The AHEAD sticks can be a good alternative to most drummers out there, especially the hard-hitting types.

Whoever will be distributing AHEAD sticks should be ready for its after-market parts and accessories, such as spare covers, tips, grip tapes etc.  Investment kasi ang pagbili ng AHEAD sticks.  One would buy a pair to start things off.  After that, yung mga papalitan na lang ay yung mga covers, or even tips...  No need to buy a whole new pair.  And as far as I know, mas mura na ang mga replacement covers ng AHEAD compared to a brand-new branded pair of sticks.

I have a pair of AHEAD sticks.  But I'm unable to use it anymore because one of the sticks broke.  Personally, I still prefer wood sticks because of its feel and it sounds better and more musical, especially with cross-sticks.  Pero kapag mabigatan na ang tugtog, AHEAD sticks are the real deal.

Mga bosing, Im planing to buy a new set of replacement covers for my ahead sticks. My problem is nawala yung case nya and burado na yung label sa sticks, di ako sure sa size. :-D

I have 3 pairs. Ive been using my first pair since june, playing almost everyday both at home and gigs.  kahapon lang bumigay.  :-D tipid sya in the long run, kasi ang tibay niya and  yung after market sleeves are cheap. i bought the after market sleeves through vinci. I wouldn't use them for recording though. For live lang.

Nice! May Ahead na sa atin! I have two pairs. One I bought in 1992 and the other one was last year. Since home drummer lang ako, my Circa 92 5A Ahead stick is still alive. I just replaced the taper once.

I like the response but I prefer the sound of wood sticks.

I don't really now the real use of it but I love it for silent practice. Medyo mahal lang.

I already told my story a few times online, but I'll share it again...

I got my first and only pair of AHEAD sticks sometime in 2002, through my good friend who went to the US.  In early '03, my former band and I were performing in Malaysia, and I would often use my AHEAD 5B sticks whenever we play heavy music.  One night, during the middle of a song, I noticed one of my AHEAD sticks feeling "weak".  So, after the gig, I inspected it.  There I discovered its damaged core.  Take note...  It's the core, not the replaceable cover.

I tend to play heavily at times, but not in an abusive nor damaging level.  So I can't believe that my supposedly tough and durable AHEAD aluminum alloy drumstick broke, considering the fact that I'm pretty much careful with my things.  I'm not sure if my frequent rimshots back in the day contributed to its damage.  But I don't think it's supposed to happen.  I may be a victim of a possible factory defect, or a lemon (a product with a hidden manufacturing defect).  I tried repairing it with steel epoxy, but it didn't work.

I still kept my AHEADs, though obviously I can't use it anymore.  I kept it as my personal museum piece, and as reference or proof that these things do break.  I didn't pose this reply to diss AHEAD sticks.  This is just a piece of reality based on my personal experience.  Anyway, I still prefer the feel and sound of good old wood.

here is the reply:

The first one broke at the handle looks like its several years old at best. Not sure about the rest but

The sticks have a 60 day warranty. They are not indestructible. If you let me know what model and how long they lasted I may be able to make some suggestions. Our sticks usually last as long as 6 pair of comparably sized wood drumsticks. They also have 1/2 the shock of wood, so they are much better for your hands.

Post by: drumster on May 29, 2008, 07:30:06 AM
Yup, the AHEADs are indeed not indestructible.  I know the rubberized replacement covers would eventually wear off.  But should their aluminum shaft break that easily

Obviously I'm no longer covered by its warranty.  And my stick broke when it was already way past its 60-day warranty coverage.  This was 5 years ago.  Mine's a 5B model.  Their reply seems to be a generic response hehe sorry no offense.

with regards to the aluminum shaft ( yung butt side), I asked cavsdieagram if he used the sticks butt side to hit the drum.di pa sya sagot. how long were you able to use your stick before it broke? did it have tearings on the shaft?
tinanong ako for details which i don't know the answers, kaya yan ang nareply.

Mga one year ko rin nagamit, more or less.  The only wear and tear I noticed are the ones from its covers, which is normal naman for the stick.

Hi Sir Vinci...sorry for the late reply... hhmm, I got the stick from Mod Suspendead...meron na agad sya maliit na crack nun. Pero matagal ko din sya nagamit then pansin ko na lumalaki yung crack, umabot sya ng half inch...Then one practice namen, in the middle of the song...biglang nahati yung stick...

^ I just checked the cover which came with my damaged AHEAD stick.  Despite its normal wear and tear, buo pa rin yung cover eh.

i had a black pair of zildjian sticks noon, e i used it for my kit, (pang display lang ata dapat yun, e nainggit ako sa guidance councilor namin kaya bumili rin ako ng pares ko..heheh), ayun nagkaron ng marks yun cymbals ko...or maybe because it also had a black nylon tip...

salamat salamat

I bought mine for 1.8k, kay BossingBoss!

Lars Ulrich is a 5B sized stick user... I use this one, comfortable kasi ako sa power...

JJ/Speed Metal sticks are 5A size... I had the chance to use an Ahead 5A stick (almost the same size and weight of the JJ/SM stick).. and boy!! it really made my fills and rolls go faster...

hope this help.. this would depend on your drumming style and preference..

I was reffering sa taper size ng JJ/SM sticks... anyways.. Ahead sticks are a must have.... reliable and durable talaga...

buy one worth 1800, get tapers and tips that cost 200 and 100 respectively...

wood sticks 350-600 depeding on the brand... Im not taking away the use of the wood sticks, I my self still use it for some instance... pero iba pa rin yung long lasting na gamit..

yup... i find it more cheaper and practical to just buy replacement tapers rather buy 350-600 wood sticks every time i break one... or i just have to work on my technique.

for me let it fade nalang sir, hassle pa mag fade lang ulit yet hindi na authentic yung logo, use ahead grip tape for more formal looks and more grip

or kung talagang gustu mo po mairestore, ipa-powder coat mo po, but never paint the portion where taper seats kasi kakapal sya ng konti and might be difficult to place/remove tapers, worst mag iba performance

also, you should have used grip tape first kung gusto mo talagang hindi matanggal yung print sa handle right from the start.

sir mambo!

i think pwede..

ganito po, try nyo kumuha ng rod (approx .5") that will extremely fit sa holes ng each broken piece,..(will be used as bridge)

then insert the rod sa larger half, tig weld, insert the small part, tig weld , re-thread to remove excess metals,..

do the same sa other stick to make their weight both almost equal

sounds simple but might be expensive and tough hard!

if for display you may use "buldog super glue" or "mighty bond"

But the balance will never be the same
