Get what you REALLY need. If you're gigging with 20 pedals and only using 5, ditch the 15. It's not worth bringing all of your pedals.
Yung iba nakikita ko andaming pedals, hindi naman lahat tinatapakan. Actually yung 'always-on' pedal lang ang (madalas) bukas - usually dirt.

this. i gave this advice just recently to a good friend. sabi ko - "baka hindi ka na kasi nakakatugtog masyado kaya ka naghahanap ng mabibili." :-D

Agree. Most of the time i SEE people selling their collection kase sobrang dami na at di na halos nagagamit.

Madalas ito sa mga adik sa pedals. Gaganda kase ng mga designs at ang daming pagpipilian. Iba iba pa ang kulay. Blame it to marketing strategies :lol:

Master the instrument with your existing gear. That way you can pick out what's best for you better.
Ex. Make your legatos the best they can be with present gear. So you can determine better if its not the guitar or anything on the chain causing the poor sustain.

in fairness, medyo naging immune ako sa ganito. i have very lucky to try out several of farseer's awesome acoustics and i just relish the experience. nakakatulog pa naman ako sa gabi after i get to try his stuff. siguro alam ko kasi na those acoustics are way out of my purchasing power at the moment. :-D

so siguro the best solution for a GAS addict is for him or her to prick his eyes out...or chop of her fingers..hahaha

Pero sa mga nagg GAS, live within your means and leverage classifieds. I'm amazed how active gear trading is. Nowadays, the only way I can justify new purchase is by letting go of current gear.

The good thing about being a student and a guitarist at the same time is being GAS-PROOF. :lol:
Of course I do have urges to buy some stuff, but for someone like me with low or no GAS funds at all, being contented with what I have is the way to go. After all, being a good guitarist does not solely rely on the gear. Focus on theory, not on the gear :)
bottom line: BE CONTENTED

1. determine the type of sound that you want to achieve(might be hard for some)
2. determine how to achieve that sound (the guitar type and fringalingdongs , amp)
3. get the best bang out of your buck (try to be patient with pedal acquisitions)
4. focus on your main platform (guitars and amps) before pedals.
5. not every new item is better than what you have maximize what you have before justifying an upgrade...

Maximize the capabilities of your current gear. You might be surprised that it can deliver the sound to your liking. Tinker, tinker. Wag masyadong inggitero. Hehehe Kaso guilty din ako dito minsan. Well I've aged and learned from experience. Thanks to the GC peeps sharing here as well. Big help guys. GAS paminsan-minsan. Ok lang yan basta may budget. :-D

Just know what you want, what you play guitar for and when to stop. GAS never stops raw. People never stop wanting things but spending so much on gear is impractical if you have bills to pay or literal gas as in petrol is being an issue. GAS is only good because it motivates me to save. When I raise the funds, I realize that I don't need them anyway because I'm good with my setup.
...I want that Ibanez TSA30 tho.

2. Make your present instrument work for you.
3. Form a band and then turn pro.
Then ang iisipin mo na lang ano ang gamit na talagang kailangan mo para sa banda mo. Then pag kumita ka na sa banda, matutuklasan mo rin na maraming pananagutan (bills, you gotta eat, raising a family), tiyakyan kung hindi totally mawawala GAS, mababawasan yan significantly.

Most likely mamahalin mo kung ano yung meron ka at biblhin mo lang kung ano ang kailangan mo. Malalaman mo rin kung mahal mo ang talaga ang musika sa hindi yung pagkaakroon lang ng maraming gamit sa ganitong paraan...

Bond with your one and only axe for years. tipong you can bend to which ever note na super kontrolado mo yung guitar mo. as if you and your guitar is working as one. that way, you will minimize GAS. maninibago at maninibago ka sa mga bagong gitara. its like stepping on the clutch of your car. then your friend asks you to drive his car. medyo kakaiba? diba. kasi gamay mo yung SAYO. :)

mag gitara lang ng mag gitara at wag mag isip ng gustong bilhin.. ganun ginawa ko.. isang taon na akong di bumibili ng gamit maliban sa strings every month at pick pag minsan.. bilhin lang ang kailangan talaga.. at isa pa.. wag tumambay dito sa pm para makaiwas.. hehehe..

I made peace with myself na hanggang di nagle-level up ang skills ko, di na rin magle-level up ang gears ko...
Tinamad na din ako lately mag-check ng latest gears and stuff. Wala na gaanong gigs, not worth ang gastos kung di mo na naman magagamit...
Sinubukan ko i-divert attention ko to other hobby para mabawasan kaka isip sa GAS...
GAS free for almost 6 months na.. I hope..

hahah ako din..tama na..past few months ang dami kong pinagbibiling mga pedals..na parang di ko naman magagamit lahat..shredhead and delay lang ayos na sa normal na gigs at tugtugan..hahaha...and iniisip ko kasi na magbuo ng small electric studio..with jamhub..and mga small watt amps and siguro a nice roland starter kit..nagpromise ako na if ever bibili ako ng guitar uli..siguraduhin ko na Jaguar or Jazzmaster na matindi na..may mga pagnanasa like Tele or mga Tokai na yan..pero manage-able..and madaling malimutan over a good nights sleep..

Wag basta sukuan at ibenta agad ang bagong gear pag di mo nagustuhan or feeling mo nagsawa ka agad. Patagalin mo naman kahit 6 months or 1 year. Minsan it takes some effort din para mapalabas mo talaga yung gusto mong magandang tunog nya. Kilalanin mo ba or sulitin mo maigi yung gear. :)

This. I don't think saying "Just don't buy gear" helps because that is the main problem; it's really hard to say no to an addiction.
You can start by replacing it. Replace GAS with SAS (Skill Acquisition Syndrome). It doesn't require that much money (virtually free if you self study), makes you a better player, makes your music skill dependent and not gear dependent.

1. You dont forget your priorities and your bills
2. If you can buy gear then you shouldnt compromise your date with your wife or gf
3. You only get what you need and what you can pay for... Credit card/s is a dangerous tool in getting gear.
4. If you want something then dont sacrifice other things like dentist checkups, med checkups, food, your daughters promile....but rather sacrifice something that you have...like your music gear, other collections, and vices like beer and cigarretes.

Overtime pay lang ang ipambili at hindi allowances at lalo ang basic salary. Magiging motivation mo ung GAS to work harder kasi iisipin mo pag may overtime, means may extra gamit ka ulit na mabibili.

This. I don't think saying "Just don't buy gear" helps because that is the main problem; it's really hard to say no to an addiction.
You can start by replacing it. Replace GAS with SAS (Skill Acquisition Syndrome). It doesn't require that much money (virtually free if you self study), makes you a better player, makes your music skill dependent and not gear dependent.
OT: I remember someone offering me P4k and P21k worth of pirated guitar instructional DVDs for my old MIK Peavey EVH Wolfgang Special. Ang tag line nya eh, "Gagaling ka na, magkakapera ka pa!" :lol:

Maiisip mo pa rin sya, actually, pero more on kung ano talaga yung tingin mong kailangan mo. Pag mag-isa ka lang kasi, ang sarap mag-imagine ng magandang rig pero hindi sya contextualized sa real needs mo.
Like ako recently for example, kung anu-anong booster yung pinagdaanan ko (Catalinbread Naga Viper, Super Chili Picoso, RC Booster, etc.) pero nauwi ako sa P2k local custom MOSFET booster kasi di ko naman kailangan pala nung malanding booster with EQ, treble boosting/grit or fat boost/buffer options. Single-knob clean booster na nasa maliit na enclosure lang talaga ang kailangan ko, so dun ako nauwi sa MOSFET booster. Nakuha ko yung gusto kong function, maganda ang tunog, sturdy naman ang pagkakagawa at mas mura pa nang di hamak.
On the other hand, never ko namang pinangarap magkaroon ng envelop filter/auto wah pedal kasi hindi naman ako mahilig sa ganung effect, pero since kinailangan ng isang banda ko na may ganung sound, napabili tuloy ako ng Robotalk 2.
The moral lesson of the story is: buy what you really need, at kung may spare funds ka pa at hindi maaapektuhan ang ibang priorities mo, then you may buy the other things that fall under "want."

seriously, kung may pambili ka naman, why not GAS? hehe. for as long as extra, disposable income sha or income na talagang sinet-aside mo for GAS purposes. wag naman yung nagugutom na pamilya mo pero bili ka pa rin ng bili ng pedals at gitara. or limas na savings mo para makabili ka lang ng custom shop fender, hehe.
isa pang way to beat or minimize it, aim for the best na. kung baga wag kang bibili ng cheap na OD pedal just for the sake of having one, na alam mo namang ibebenta mo eventually. do your research, and get the best OD that your budget can buy, yung medyo masakit talaga, that way mas gusto mong sulitin yung purchase mo. sa gitara ganon din. kung kaya ng budget mo mag-MIA or butik guitars, dun ka! kung budget mo pang-MIJ, MIM, get the best sounding guitar that you can find, meron naman yan for sure, hehe.
basta wag lang kalimutan yung priorities muna. pero yun nga, best kung makuntento ka na lang at wag inggitero, hehe.

Hahaha, parang bakal Strat ko lang yun. Matino tunog nun e, kung bakit naman kasi naisipan i-firemodel55-style mod nang ganun yun. Callaham bridge assembly/trem block, KTS Titanium saddles, Bare Knuckle Mother's Milk pickups with Callaham baseplates, Vitamin Q PIO tone cap, Sperzel locking tuners, Graphtech nut tapos naging tunog icepick. Hahaha!
So here's another tip: when modding guitars, make sure to do a whole lot of research first before you proceed. Hindi porke't maganda ang replacement parts eh gaganda na ang tunog ng gitara mo. Knowing your guitar anatomy 101 (e.g. tonewood, electronics, etc.) will go a long way.
