Title: Neko Guitarworks - NK build #4 Claymore
Post by: Rmansh on September 04, 2012, 10:40:37 PM
Hello everyone,
Just want to share our latest build just off the workshop. It took the team more than 2 months to build this plus countless hours of designing it (kitty looks like a zombie). And we are very happy with the outcome :) I hope you guys don't mind, i'll be inserting some text from NK's FB page so you can read some background.
Disclaimer: Iam a partner of Neko and a hobbyist as well :)
Years back, with a growing interest in arts and music especially in guitars i have tried countless of different brands.. some that i loved or hated and some that i got used to and some that i felt i have to change. i will not deny that i fell for vintage style instruments.. i tried so many guitars and took notes on what i loved about them and what i think has to go.. then after a week of comparing different guitars in a local music store. i went home and tried to remember the guitars that i have tried from the cheapest to the most expensive that store has to offer and what i liked about them. I arrived to a conclusion.. "i wanted a guitar that has that vintage vibe in a modern feel and comfort.. without that pointy feel of course" weird but then, in my past time and off from work i started doing blueprints of that dream guitar that i was hoping for, arrived in maybe almost 15 designs that were revised countless of times thru the years... this year December 2011, out of 15 i finished just 1 which i am so happy and proud of. Stupid enough without thinking i said goodbye to my boss at the factory were i worked at and quit my day job, focused on this design the whole day everyday.
January 2012 i talked to a long time friend from Qingdao who has been in the music instrument production for many years, asked him for help that maybe he wants to be part of this project; presented my plan and not even 5 minutes of talk of what i want and what he can offer we both agreed to setup another yet very small guitar workshop, limited number of workers with many years of service.. just to contribute on this project.
Description Headquarters: St. Ann, MO USA Custom Shop: Qingdao, China Parts, Hardware, Resources: S.Korea, USA, Thailand, India
NK is a small luthier shop that is in Qingdao China, we have limited staff to make limited number of guitars each month or 2 months, assembled primarily for my designed instruments since 2008. NK Guitars are designed, inspected and controlled in the USA.
Objective -to provide guitarist high quality CNC and hand made guitars in a very reasonable musician price.
-2012 objectives spread this brand across the continents. more hardware and wood choices
ok enough of the text but please don't think we are masters of this field, we'd like to hear your comments too.
pics now (or die )
Seraphim Simulation - there was a lot of discussions when kitty showed this to the team. The body contour, weight, AANJ, bigger trem route, vintage looks, even knobs and positioning of the logo. Good thing our luthier was kind enough (and patient) to follow the initial draft. (http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/rearocker/NKguitarworks/Seraphim-ver1.jpg)
the Specs. there are 4 colors we discussed. pink, dessertgold, goldtop and olive. At this time we were able to grab Graphtech and custom korean pickups.
the template. kitty pointed out the deep cutaway. this was the 2nd template submitted to us by our luthier. (http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/rearocker/NKguitarworks/534976_447504531950667_449419773_n.jpg)

here's a glimpse of 7string Hydra. will post more pics soon
Parang madalas matatamaan ng picking hand yung toggle witch? just my opinion. other than that it's good. :)
salamat bro
normal lang yan bro madalas mo makikita sa mga fusion players na mahilig magswitch on the fly. Sila din yun very minimal movement yun right hand and mga soft picker. Sadly hindi sya nababagay sa mga low waist players. :)
Chief, prototype pa lang ito, nagpalit kasi kami ng luthier and mag eexperiment pa kami sa electronics kaya wala sya pickups. And gagamitan namin ng Schaller. Baka mag ship out din kami ng demo units sa mga reviewers for a proper feedback. abangan:)
No price yet

this one is a prototype. Gamit namin Elm wood for the body, neck is maple/ebony combo, fingerboard is ebony. May mga binago kami sa design and hardwares (isa na yun seymour Duncan which is HUGE for us) pero yun wood material parehas lang so can't discuss the final spec pa. Even yun headstock may improvement din.
Also, we will be using push-pull pots options, ano ba mas ok? coil split/parallel/series? we can order any SD combo pickups just need to narrow down the selection. TIP master? :)

I don't have much experience on guitars that have elm bodies. My understanding of elm is that is has maple-like tone characteristics but is relatively unstable. So I don't think it's the ideal wood for you to use if you're an upstart guitar manufacturer that aims to produce guitars that have consistent characteristics. Ayaw nyong gamiting pang-top na lang muna yung elm tapos basswood or some other tonewood sa body?
Regarding pickups, ano bang target market/sound nyo for this guitar?

unstable ? we did not use it for the neck, only for body. Elm is much closer to ash in terms to character/grain/tone than maple. You should try it. Also we do not like basswood, well the ones available with our lumber provider. i guess it depends on the source.

Yup, ang characteristic kasi ng elm is dense yung kahoy so theoretically, it'll have more variance from plank to plank. Padala ka ng sample dito sa Manila, puntahan ko para matest. Ano ulit ang target market nyo dito? For the metal guys ba or for the all-around guitarists?

here is what Kitty and our builders say about basswood.
"basswood has great tone but only good for solid colors or with maple cap (like suhr). Not good for stain/clear tops. There is very little wood grain on it. it is inexpensive and cheap kind of wood, SOFT and not suitable for neck-tru , glued wood bounds and much preferred for Bolt-ons. "
Also, these basswoods are from "our source" so it may be entirely different from other companies using the same material. If we can acquire a BETTER kind of basswood then i guess we can use it in the future.

Kung elm body + ebony board yung Claymore... I would suggest a warmer pickup (for balance) with good articulation to accentuate the attack and open-ended quality of the swamp ash body. Unfortunately, I don't know a whole lot about SD pickups since I'm a DiMarzio guy. :-(

some updates:
meet our tech guy Jason. He will do the final setup of all Claymore models, that includes complete fretwork details, nut work, strings change, action/intonation, etc. He is a Level 1 tech and was trained in Japan under Mr. Akimoto, a 56 year old Master Luthier. He told me Level 3 is the highest and would require atleast 25 years of experience and must know how to use japanese tools (not just the ones you can buy online). His teacher, Mr. Akimoto, is level 3.

I haven't asked Al, Jason can repair a lot of things like truss rods, bent necks, neck reset, and some others. What he can't do is restore vintage instruments or build a guitar or refinish since he don't have a booth. I'll get some more info when i get back at the shop. btw he have a Certificate posted on the wall, from ishibashi.

I've always wondered if there was some standardization in luthiere. It's interesting to know that there's one in Japan.

ishibashi standards lang ata i think. whats more interesting is that they setup all the used guitars they sell, buzz free, polished frets, pero yun mga gibsons and prs hindi lol. these guys charge a lot but im satisfied with the results, I had 5 guitars done, all consistent.
some pic of their fretwork (http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/rearocker/NKguitarworks/1005448_625096454191473_1927964224_n_zpsd6b31e71.jpg) (http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/rearocker/NKguitarworks/999161_625096414191477_287911018_n_zps03ec174e.jpg)

well you found something, here's the real deal bago humaba pa
2nd pic is legit, we commissioned a few builds with him, trial lang so we can assess his abilities. it didn't came out as expected so we dished him. we called it hydra prototype and sold them cheap just to break even. it never went into full production. we were not aware he built more and tried to sell it there in china.
after we moved to another builder, a UK based seller found him, Loki. binigay nun builder yun blueprints ng hydra sa kanya and loki changed the headstock. We talked to loki and he said he wasnt aware those were Neko blueprints (?) which is weird, all our blueprints have Neko Logo in them. but there's nothing we can do, tapos na yun guitars. Clearly there is something amiss here, we just decided to move on (and be careful next time).
Wraith, Seraphim and Claymore was built by a different luthier though.
