thanks!

WHAT DO U MEAN BUTAS NG BASS DRUM MO??

baka yung resonant side ng bass drum nya.. me butas yung skin.
-

That's not a snare in front of Akira's bass drum. That's a Yamaha Subkick (http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/ContentDetail/PressReleaseDetail/0,,CNTID%253D33527%2526CTID%253D,00.html). It's a 6.5" woofer mounted inside a 10" shell. It's basically a subsonic kick mic.
-
it's called a yamaha subkick. it's essentially a 6.5" subwoofer reverse-wired and is being used as a secondary kickdrum microphone. it captures frequencies way below the limit of most kick drum microphones. the speaker is housed in an 8" drum shell. i also use a subwoofer as a second kickdrum mic (although not the yamaha subkick)
putting a tom in front of a bass drum isn't actually a new thing. even engineers from the 70's have been doing it to capture more frequencies and harmonics to add to the bass drum sound. they use a separate kick drum mic or condenser mic to do this.
-
oh, by the way, if you like the sound of your bass drum when you put a snare in front - you can try placing the snare in it's usual place, and just add a microphone under the snare drum. even in that position the snare wires sympathetically resonates with the bass drum.
at least in this position, you can still use the snare drum. :-D
about the subkick, well, there was a thread on it in the very recent past. hasn't been updated for a long time though.
i think i might just do that...

hmmm.. interesting.. you mean by reverse wire is changing the polarity of the speaker? tama ba? and that will give you a mic effect?

ako na lang muna.
tama po!
:)

speakers are mics, mics are speakers
no need to reverse polarity just plug in your speaker on an unbalanced mic in
-
snare drum ah...masubukan nga
already tried putting a cajon infront of my bass drum...bumuo ng konti yung tunog :-)

hmmm. ngayon ko lang nalaman ito ah.. hmmm.. so whats the difference in effect kapag tama ang polarity than reverse polarity kapag nilagay mo sa mic in.. and why kelangan unbalanced input? hindi ba siya mag wowork kapag balance?
-
unbalanced kasi 2 wires lang yun, balance di ba 3?
may effect yung pagreverse ng polarity kung nag add ka ng 2 signals (e.g. mic + woofer) kailangan reverse polarity yung isa dun kasi mag cacancel out yung bass mo. ninipis yung tunog nun imbis na ma reinforce nya. no need to reverse the polarity kung speaker lang gagamitin mo though be conscious yun sa ibang mics na malapit sa bass
try to export your recordings to mono, listen if the bass sounds weaker on mono than on your stereo mixdown, if that's the case then you need to reverse the polarity of your speaker cum mic. or simply move it farther or closer to the bass. imho just use mics, its simpler hehehe
-

oh yeah. speaker nga pala pinaguusapan.. im thinking of microphone kasi. heheheh.. sorry..
-

ah guys going back to the topic....
just remember .. when doing this snare in front thing of the bass drum..
2" >> 3" inches distance from the bass drum and then tune the reso higher.... and tune the batter head lower
pra mas malakas yung impact ng buzz dun sa snare.. and also .. dont over tighten the throw off of the snare...

-
a kick with a buzz...quite interesting and creative... :-) :-) :-)
here's the yamaha subkick, looks like what you guys have in mind but it has a different purpose and intended effect, its more of a microphone...a 20k petots mic at that!

well, yes, you're right. you don't need to change the polarity. but that's what they did for the subkick. speakers and mics are both transducers. one time i even used a headphone as a mic, and a mic as a headphone.

hey guys for the thread on the subkick...
