Title: Let's celebrate a Blue Xmas!
Post by: deltaslim on November 14, 2006, 08:42:30 AM
Guys, I thought you'd like to know we are organizing a "Blue Christmas" party/concert at Conspiracy for Dec 15.

* Jook Joint Jam [/color] [/b] (w/ Kakoi, Reuben, and me... Formerly known as D3, kaso di naman kami laging 3 dobros... more like an old-style jug band + all sorts of jammers on various instruments and vocal)

Some ideas to make this "xmas party for blue people fun" (haha--- oxymoron!):
- I'm thinking of asking the bands to do at least one bluesy xmas song each.  Up to them what they want to sing/play basta blues-influenced. I think Gerry (Blueskrieg cd producer) will sponsor a prize for the best xmas song performance!
- Band members and audience will be enjoined to come (and play) in their xmas attire or costumes (I wanna see BB in a Santa Claus costume while riffing on a cherry red 335!)
- Organize an "exchange gift" (ie, cd) for those willing to participate (band member or audience/guest).  Each participant brings a blues cd he/she thinks other people might enjoy. Tapos exchange gift tayo at one point in the program. Pwede ring 'pass it  forward' style so you can sort of pick what you like and to avoid getting a cd you already have in your collection.
- at siyempre, open jam!

C'mon blues brothers, let's pitch in to make this a fun Blue Christmas. Thanksgiving na rin natin for the wonderful year of blues that 2006 has been and panalangin na rin for an even bluer 2007 (eg, Blueskrieg cd ;-))!!!

PS - Thanks to vjoe for the poster/flyer!

Funny... I was just about to PM and invite you to come, Jim!  I didn't know about that Miles tune but I hope it will interest our cousins in blues -- the jazzers -- to come too.

hey boss Allan!  i'm thinking we might start as early as 830am.  we want to give sufficient playing time to the featured bands, esp Blue Rats who are coming all the way from Makati, and also for open jam.

hope to see you there and pls invite your Conspi partners and the usual suspects (Magoo, etc.!

That's the long version, pero Jook Jam lang for short. Didn't want to call it just Jook Jam cuz there's an mp3 player by that name.   But the idea is essentially a jam-style group focusing on jook joint type music in an old streetcorner, jug-band style approach... country blues, ragtime, spirituals/old black gospel, 60s/troubadour type tunes, and everything else we feel like it.  We welcome jook jammers on any instrument (kazoo, washboard, jug!)  basta swak sa music!  :-)

Jook joint is highly appropriate - in the segregated American south these were the only clubs that were open to blacks and this is where blues and RnB thrived and evolved. If not  for the jook joint network in the "chitlin' circuit" the blues wouldn't have traveled up north to Chicago where it got electrified as all hell.

For a film/movie reference, check out the "Color Purple" - lots of scenes there take place at the jook joint.

+1

There were other venues for those types of music, but they didn't make for good band names: "Messyhands' Medicine Show"...  "Kakoy's Sanctified Convention"... "Fish Fry Papas"...  "Trio Tent Revival"... "Pugon Dough Boys"...

Wow - this is overwhelming!  Thanks for the interest.  Everybody is welcome, of course, especially Jun, Dave, and Wally.  Pero if any of them want to extract some kind of talent fee, they should discuss it with the band they're jamming with.  Kung open jam naman, well, free will naman ng jammers yun eh.  This all about celebrating xmas and the spirit of giving (including our music, talent, and time).

With these developments, I'm thinking of pulling Jook Joint out of the lineup just to make space for longer sets by the 3 bands w/ jammers, and still have time for open jam. My understanding is that around 1am ang cut-off ng Conspi eh.  Pero minsan nakaka-stretch ng konti (eg, begging and pleading sa irate neighbors).  Still, we need to start promptly.

Hey Jim - I already invited you in a previous post in this thread.  You are always welcome.  With Joey P already there, why not call the Mabanta brothers and cook up some hot Mexicali dishes!  ;-)

UPDATE:

1.  Rebolusyon Rekords will be selling Blueskrieg cds at the gate.  They also plan to organize some xmas fun and games and will give out prizes.  Even cooler, they will offer this promo:

2. Free entrance for every purchase of Blueskrieg cd
... otherwise, entrance is PhP100.   :-)

3.  I'm not sure and can't predict how many plan to bring xmas exchange gifts, but I've gotten feedback that some people are willing to bring cds as give aways or prizes. Maybe we'll just have a paripa (w/ tambiolo?!) or something to determine winners.

4.  Neither Soul Benders nor Firebottle have had the time to learn and rehearse a xmas song. I can always play Silent Night, Holy Night on slide tho. :-)  I'm looking forward to Blue Rats' blues xmas tune -- I know they're ready!

What a fun gig!

Soul Benders were tasty, tasty, tasty! Lito was smoooooth. Arie's tele was spanking through that tweed. Delta's slide was slipperrrrry...

Snakecharmer was smoking. Messyhands and Teletubby were hot.

Highlight of the evening: Milli Vanilli........... that's 3beers looking like he was lip syncing onstage with Snakecharmer on "You Can't Always Get What You Want"...... because the mic was off.  :-D :-D :-D

Thanks to daddy delta for putting it together. Some guys took some video -- paki-post lang kung pwede so we can see how terrible we were....

HAHAHA!  I gotta agree on the highlight. I told TT dati na anthem na yung Dylan tune nila.  Pero anthemic din itong rendition nila ng Stones tune na to. :-)  (*ayos ba sa save, Messyhands?*)

Coolest part for me was that we all had a lot of time to hang out, enjoy each others' music, magkulitan, alaskahan, sing-along, whatever!!! Party talaga kagabi, thanks for staying till the last bagsakan (ng Jook Jam featuring "Joe Cocker" impersonator... Butch!)

Blue Rats played their average gig -- uniformly excellent, tight, and entertaining.   :-D

As for Soul Benders, I hear a lot of good feeback on (and demand in the future for more) pinoy rock and Eagles! ;-).

Had a good time playing drums with Joric Slim and Dr. Ted - I think we ended up playing a whole set's stuff of material though I had no idea what was playing until we actually played it! Yeah, it ended up being Soul Benders 2nd set w/ you as the drummer. To be honest, kating kati tumugtog ang Soul Benders.  Dami pa naming pwede kantahin sana, including ung request for Maria Cafra and more pinoy and 70s rock.  Midway through "Mary Had A Little Lamb", Arie and I had this exchange (shouting through the din onstage):

Arie: Ano next?
Joric: Alin, yung after nitong verse?
Arie: Hindi, yung next na song natin?
Joric: Ano ka ba?! Mamaya na natin isipin yan!   :-D

Pero, really, the honor was ours, Jim.  Your fills and syncopations were awesome.  Halos mapahinto ako mid-song.  At ang dali makipag-"amuyan" sa yo.  I also like your controlled discipline (jazz drummer at heart?)...  bagay sa Soul Benders --- nakasandal din kasi kami sa aming Mr. Cool drummer na si Jingle.

Anytime Soul Benders or Firebottle is gigging, you'll always be welcome to drop in and hit the skins.

Editor's Note: In the event that someone reading this might think that Mr. Slim has developed the olfactory prowess of a hound dawg, rest assured he is probably actually referring to the cues (often purely visual) that musicians give each other in the context of a jam so you know where the song stops, ends, who solos, and the whole "kita kita na lang tayo sa dulo" vibe so the audience thinks you actually rehearsed the darn thing.  It's something not easily taught - possibly an instinct only developed over years of jamming with complete strangers.

Or so we think.

i was at 1 out of only 3 music stores in warsaw kanina. nakapag test ng od3 (ulit). around 6k. mas mahal pa pala dito. sa frankfurt naman nakakita ako ng maliit na hohner blues harp for my little girl, 32 euro. and a big one for me, in C, for 26euro. so dapat lahat ng songs namin transpose na to C.
Wow you really are in Warsaw! I traced your IP to the Hotel Jan III Sobieski. Secret mission ba yan para sa CIA?
aww... you had to trace my IP to believe me? where is the love man? :-D kidding. i was sent here by the company last nov27 for training. balik ko sa 21. sayang wala nang gig nun. :-D :-D

Oh not that I didn't believe you, I was mystified by the original remark - anyway, I routinely trace everyone IPs - as I know Blue Buddah posts from a MyDSL Pro account and Delta used PLDT Vibe. what are admins for anyway? Or more to the point - what are we in power for? hehe

Frankfurt seems to be a more heavy duty music city. In 2002 I hitched a ride with Yupangco and attended the Musik Messe trade show in Frankfurt. Can you imagine 3 music instrument exhibit halls as big as SM Megamall? Namm could fit in a tiny corner.

:-D i was kidding (as usual). i hate frankfurt. pero only because i lost my phone there. and got stuck at the airport and had to sleep on the airport benches overnight (thick fog over warsaw when i first tried to fly in). pero there's this shop there that sells blues harps. yun ang pasalubong ko sa little girl ko. she's a harmonica nut and there's this baby blues harp i think she'll like.

warsaw is nice. krakow is better. looks exactly like the europe you see in the movies. hard not to walk around on the cobblestone streets and not think "bourne... jason bourne..." :-D :-D

+3+3+3.....beers.  :-D

We're all dying to see evidence of 3beers' Milli Vanilli / Joe Cocker impersonation. The panel on this thread will judge whether there was in fact singing going on by 3beers or Snakecharmer did it all by themselves.

 :-D :-D :-D

ngayon ko lang napansin yung sigs ni joric and zann... pareho pala ng pangangailangan... except kami di namin kailangan maghanap ng keyboard player kasi pag nakahanap na ang snakecharmer, hihiramin/susulitin na lang namin.

 :-D :-D :-D

sayang din si Roneil, uma-astig na ang keyboard playing nya - may attitude na ang licks - lumalaban na nga sa jamming eh. big loss din to both Snakecharmer and Firebottle. Work sucks talaga - istorbo sa banda - hehehe... ;)

Rakrakan -- great videos! But the one of 3beers with Snakecharmer takes the cake!!! Not only was the band sounding great and tasty, but that's positive proof that the lip syncing skills of the Milli Vanilli dudes and the spastic neurons of Joe Cocker do indeed exist in one person....

More vids... Soul Benders jamming with Dr Ted Nikoloff (Houserockers) and PhilMusic big brother  Jim Ayson!   :-D

Note: Sorry for the very dark areas in the video. Ang dilim nung isang side ng stage and my small handheld vidcam doesn't shoot well in the dark.  Ok naman ang audio e. :-)

Okay after very little deliberating  and beyond a shadow of a doubt 3 beers wins hands downs for his Oscar performance singing the legends of rock,  "The Rolling Stones" You Can'y Always Get What You Want"  with Snakecharmer and giving Milli Vanilli a run for their money. What more can be said? The man has no morals or scruples but plenty of balls, BIG BALLS, VERY BIG BALLS!!! Butch you make life worth living. All hail 3 beers!!!!

That's funny, watching from outside it looked like 3beers was giving it his all. So you say that was all just lip synching? Well you can't always get what you want ... :-)

Pay attention Andy as you are confusing facitious with admiration. Butch is the Obi -Wan of the Blue Rats

Ey slowhead -- the facetiousness pertained to the "lip syncing", not the praise.  We all agree: 3beers may in fact be the Yoda of the Rats....

Merry Christmas y'all -- hope it's a blue one.
