Title: Disassembling your guitar/amp/gear for travel purposes...
Post by: guitaricci on October 20, 2014, 11:57:58 PM
Anyone of you have tried to disassemble a bolt-on neck guitar and tried to fit it in the suitcase for travel purposes? I have a planned travel to the US and i plan to buy a Fender (either a Strat or Tele). I'm thinking..baka naman kasya ito sa suitcase pag disassembled para 2 suitcase ang pwede ko i-check-in (para may pasalubong) instead of 1 suitcase + 1 oversized baggage...which is the guitar with a hardcase.

May nagtangka na bang gumawa nito? Is it safe?

I did that last contract...nilagay ko yung gitara ko sa baggage bag ko na naka-check in...but sinugurado ko na well protected yung gitara ng mga jacket and clothings ko...then sinabi ko sa airport fragile yung luggage ko. ok naman nauwi ko naman ng buo yung gitara ko nothing happens sa intonation ng neck. take note ginawa ko yun para makabawas ako ng bagahe ko since seafarer ako. So what I did, dinis-mantle ko yung neck and body nung gitara pagdating ko dito sa pinas binuo ko na lang ulit hehehehehe!...

Thanks for the replies. So mukhang may mga gumagawa naman pala. I'll just call the airline to check with them.  :-)

I did that before. wrapped a body in a couple tshirts, inserted the guitar neck in some long tube socks and the active electronics in a box. Well my luggage was inspected a couple of times because the pickups looked like plastic explosives wired up.  :-D

its a common practice since Leo Fender invented it. I believe, kung tama alaala ko  sa mga nabasa ko. another reason i can remember is that Leo Fender wanted the manufacturing process to be simple. after all he is the Henry Ford of the guitar world. just in case may mangyari sa neck or kailangan ng refret, pwede i mail yung neck sa factory and irereplace ng fender with a new neck....

yes, marami gumagawa niyan, mga biyaherong musikero.

ako naman as a hobbyist, lagi kong ginagawa yan, from Manila to Aus and even interstate sa Aus.

Yup. Many times. Last time was when I had a holiday in Japan last March. I bought a CIJ Jazz Bass from a thrift store. Disassembled it, wrapped the neck, body, and hardware in bubble wrap. Placed the body and neck in separate luggages sandwiched between clothes. No problemo.

If you're going to do this just once, wala atang problema.  However, if you might be doing this frequently you might want to consider using screw-in inserts in the pocket where the screw holes are.  Eventually magagastado yung threads sa kahoy and could affect neck stability.  There are a couple of kits on the web, which are made up of four sets of inserts and matching machine screws.

I remeber my classmate..also a forumer here..brandrey..when he finished his stint playing in a band abroad..to save on shipping costs..and space..he was able to ship a load of his guitars via shipping box back home.. no problemo..
