It's that time of year when, flab in hand, we join the gym with much fanfare.
But which exercise is best to help us lose weight?
The debate over whether we should turn to lifting weights or running on the treadmill still divides opinion, argues Matthew Haines, a senior lecturer in health and wellbeing at the University of Huddersfield.
Writing for The Conversation, he explains that while endurance-type exercise like running and cycling burn more calories, resistance training like weight-lifting raises the metabolism for days afterwards.
And high-intensity interval training - doing short burst of extremely difficult exercise - has also been shown to raise the metabolism and burn body fat.
