Title: DIY Cab Build # 5 (1x12 Mesa Recto style)
Post by: r_chino18 on January 27, 2016, 01:56:58 PM
An new amp head is on the way so I decided to build myself a new 1x12 cab. I've got some spare time as well so hopefully I can finish the build just in time for its arrival.

I'm basing this cab build on a Mesa Mini Recto Straight 1x12 cab with the following dimensions - 19 3/4" x 18" x 11.5" (L x W x D).

I decided to make the cab slightly deeper at 11.5" (opposed to the original at 11") to make room for any human error while cutting. However, it seems that all went good so I'll go with the very slightly deeper measurement.

3/4" marine grade plywood was used. I started out by taking my measurements and cutting a whole length across the plywood. It was crucial to cut it squarely with respect to the surface as it would definitely decrease the margin of error later on when I piece them up.

The plank was labeled and measured. This will be my top, bottom, and side panels for the cab. For this build, I'm not going for the usual butt joint. I have acquired a dovetail jig, however, I was hesitant to use it on plywood as the wood might burst and I might encounter a lot of tears.

I'll go with a more tedious manual dovetail joint, but relatively simpler although equally effective. The dovetail will be limited to two big dovetails just for structural reasons. This will defeat using screws and nails for the actual edges. This way, I can round off the edges better when at the latter stage of the build.

After measuring the panels and drawing lines for my dovetail cuts, it was on to the actual cutting.

Special thanks to a good friend and fellow forumer, rayvelasco, for sharpening my edges! My chisel can now cut through the "sandwich" of the ply easier and cleaner.. just like a hot knife thru butter.  :-)

Here's the finished rough cut on one edge... and I'll be doing those on 7 more corners..  :-o

The counterpart of the dovetails would be where they'd join...

After going through all the panels, the best part was the assembly. It's just like assembling puzzle pieces. It should not be much of a problem when the measurements and cuts are accurate. The outcome is a tight fitting joint. Minor gaps will be filled and the joints will be glued as well. Pretty happy with how it turned out. :)

Once the 4 panels are assembled and due to the design of the dovetails, the cab can definitely hold its shape even without glues and nails. An advantage is that I can secure it better (and squarely) when it's time for gluing and clamping and the actual structural support is increased.

After the rough box assembly, braces will be glued inside. This is for the baffle support and the back panel. Then the edges will be sanded down and leveled to remove the uneven surface before rounding off the corners... still a long way to go.. :)

Great stuff as always chino!  :)

Alam ko nakapagbuo ka na ng similar projects dati using the same sort of plywood. TIA!

Interesting question... I actually wanted to use MDF for this build, pero I don't have the proper tools pa to cut it properly, alam ko alanganin yun gamitan ng handsaw eh.. Would love the get hold of some void-free baltic birch ply, pero ang alam kong source ay medyo malayo and it's certainly not cheap.

I got lucky with this plywood (acquired late last year), konti ang voids niya compared sa mga iba kong naencounter earlier last year and nung 2014.

Though I never had any rattling issues sa kanila. I guess yung rattling will be more of how solid the construction is.

My 1st cab build, 1x12 Egnater Rebel size cab w/ a Celestion Rocket 50 is now with juwanfidel. He uses it with his Orange Dark Terror, alam ko gamit na gamit rin for recording. :)

My 2nd build was a 2x12 Fender Bandmaster size style 212.. eto medyo oversized cab and hindi niya nagustuhan yung Jensen Mod 12-70 speakers kasi hindi ma-drive nung speakers yung laki ng dimensions. Eventually put Eminence Governors which put the oomph in the cab. A fellow forumer got it and paired it with his Randall head. Match made in heaven raw. :)

My 3rd build was a 2x12 Twin Reverb style cab para dun sa Fender Dual Showman Reverb (Twin Reverb head) ko dati, it had a pair of Jensen Mod 12-70 speakers... now with the band Earthmover.

The 4th build was a 2x12 Bluesbreaker style cab which I used for a while with my amp head until I got a bigger cab for it..

Of them all, hindi ako naka experience ng rattling.. pero I must say na malaking factor ang matching ng speaker sa dimensions ng cab. Will probably get back with updated results when I finish this cab and fire it up with an amp.

And while they have been great cabs.. ibang-iba pa rin talaga ang level ng boutique cabs..

I just want to chime in and share some impt. info sa plywood. I just finished my DIY 2x12 cab in the specs of Bogner OS 212 height, Orange 212 depth and Mesa vertical 212 width loade w/ Eminence Governor for my Mesa Boogie Roadster and it sounds mean and full. Solve talaga ako sa 3/4 sa marine grade plywood but the catch is there are so many plywood claims na marine grade sila but for me Santa Rosa Plywood is the real marine grade plywood locally,

Ito yung ginagawang bangka locally na malalaki medyo pricy more than twice the price sa ibang plywood. I was looking for a birch plywood but wala akong mahanap good thing is naka score ako nang Santa Rosa Plywood its 5ply thick and non-void talaga xa and solid yung fly wala akong makitang sandwich ply in the middle sa board like sa 2nd pic nung OP though pwede mo xang lagayan nang sealant para walang air in the middle sa ply that can add some resonant at high volumes.

Nice build you got there. From the dimensions and choice of speakers, I bet it sounds massive and chunky with your Dual Rec.

Update with the cab build... Baffle braces are in.. Glued and clamped and 'screwed' in place.

Nice cab build sir.. Was wondering where did you get your amp grill cloth locally? I'm building a DIY oversized 1x12 for my amp ( 4th build already ). Dati yung mga gawa kong cab
plastic gray mosquito nets gamit ko. I was thinking baka may ibang alternative na mas maganda.

Speaking of, I back-read my old DIY cab threads, most of them, wala na pala pictures.. :-)

I agree hehe. Its the cheapest way to go for cabs and its fun and exciting naman when building. Nah puro 1X12 lang nagawa ko made up of cheap 3/4 plywoods sa mga 2nd hand wood stores. Sa mga marunong add din kayo ng links or shops about alternative grill cloths or Tolex. For years Ive been using Tarpauline (Black) and Carbon fiber sticker for Tolex and mosquito net for grill cloth. Baka may mas magandang alternative na may mabilhan locally. Big help din sa amin yun who can't afford international shipping for tolex and real grill cloths. etc.

For grill cloth mahirap talag maka hanap swerte na kung maka hanap ka nang medyo makapal na grill cloth, In my case ang tawag pala dun sa grill cloth like sa chester enterprises or the likes is "ALASKIN" then for the tolex marami namn diyan sa SUNGOLD or any store that specializes furniture prinala.

I will post for some close up image sa santa rosa plywood and its ply, tolex and grill in the following days para makatulong sa mga fellow DIYérs.

DIY Cab Build #3 (2x12 modified Twin Reverb style) (http://talk.philmusic.com/index.php?topic=276204.msg3773431#msg3773431)

I've used regular cotton cloth (folded in two para makapal and stretched very well habang nilalagay sa baffle), pero on my Twin Reverb cab build, I eventually ordered the correct Fender silver grill cloth outside Pinas.

Nagbasa ako nung isang gabi regarding the Sta Rosa plywood.. may history pala yan, dating Sta Clara tapos naging Sta Rosa.. made by Zamboply according sa nabasa ko.. Looks like good stuff. Sana makahanap ako nito, if not, my next cab build will be from solid pine.

Nice, Ang Ganda Sir Chino.   Pulido pagkakagawa.

Salamat, sir.. :) yung 3/4 inch (~18mm) marine plywood ay nasa mga 1,000 to 1,200php per board (4ft x 8ft). Enough to make two 1x12 cabs... I'm actually building two 1x12s at the moment. Hahaha.

Measured the baffles and marked accordingly.. Will be easier to cut out the holes first before sawing the squares from the main plywood.

http://www.pinoyboats.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2448 (http://www.pinoyboats.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2448) . I think the most impt. in DIY cab making is the quality of the ply,
I've tried some pine cabs nag shine talaga xa for a clean to early breakup but sa high gain I prefer non-resonant material like birch ply or MDF,
pero yung Birch ply wala talag akong mahanp locally may nag offer sa akin pero in a bulk order.

@ sir chino pa document naman sa wiring nyo sir I'm pretty noob in soldering yung sa aking kaibaigan ko nag wiring binigyan kulang xa nang schematics, ano gamit mo for the input jacks sa cable speaker?

Agree ako sa findings mo bro.

Solid cab balak ko for a "clean-ish" style head and play, hanggang light OD... dahil sa pag resonate ng cab. :) Tapos syempre, plywood or MDF pag dating sa mga heavier stuff or generally the majority of genres.

Wiring will depend sa impedance na habol mo for your build. I can do yung may switch pag sa 2x12.. kung parehong 8 ohms ang speaker, pwede mag lagay ng switch and select a 16-ohm or 4-ohm total impedance.

Pero since 1x12 ang ito, very straight forward lang ang gagawin ko. Isang input jack lang.. Or pwedeng dalawa so I can hook up two cabs in parallel.. Switchcraft ang jacks na gamit ko.. Tapos yung sa speaker naman, any speaker cable from 14-18 AWG.. the thicker, the better. :)

Spent a whole night fixing the broken image links dun sa previous DIY threads ko. Haha.
DIY Cab build #2 (2x12 Bandmaster style) (http://talk.philmusic.com/index.php?topic=261470.msg3567060#msg3567060)
DIY Cab Build #3 (2x12 modified Twin Reverb style) (http://talk.philmusic.com/index.php?topic=276204.msg3773431#msg3773431)

I've used regular cotton cloth (folded in two para makapal and stretched very well habang nilalagay sa baffle), pero on my Twin Reverb cab build, I eventually ordered the correct Fender silver grill cloth outside Pinas.

Ive seen a lot of see thru finishes sa web. One sample can be seen on Premier guitar's rig rundown of the band Brand new yung 2x12 nila natural finish pero mukhang kelangan ng sobrang smooth na surface to make it look great and attractive.

Thanks, yung favorite build ko was probably the Twin Reverb style. Medyo compact lang kasi sya. Haha. Probably my cleanest too. :D

Pero sana maging mas malinis itong Recto style build.

I'm sure it will. Every build is an upgrade from the previous mas maraming experience mas lalong gumaganda yung gawa.

In the process, may bago akong natututunan lagi.. :)

Update.... Cut my braces and test fitted them. These braces will be for the back panel. I'll be using a thinner back panel, 1/2" marine ply will be used. Made sure that they fit tightly before gluing, screwing, and clamping.

Update.. was on the fence if I should add braces for the inner corners. The dovetail joint was plenty enough to stabilize the whole cab, but I've got some left over wood brace which I didn't want to throw away... Oh well.. might as well use them.

Thanks bro. Yup. I'll do a provision where both cabs can be connected (in parallel) and be used simultaneously with one head ala 2x12. :)

SIDE PROJECT...

I have a 10-watt Blackstar ID Core which I use in my shop and find to be decent sounding for the price.. However, I'm being limited by the small 2.5" speakers. Next to my trusty Roland JC-20 with 5.25" speakers, the Blackstar sounds too small.

Thanks to Mark (piekey) for the assist with the new speakers.. I opted to replace the stock 2.5" speakers with bigger 5.25". I didn't want to massacre the original MDF baffle in the process so I decided to just make a new baffle for the Blackstar.

Night and day difference with the sound dispersion. It sounds a lot bigger and fuller despite the low wattage. Not much cone cry and speaker breakup as well. :)

Hey bro.. I only have one speaker in my reserve so it will most definitely go to one of the cabs.. The other one is an extra build.. A friend of mine has first dibs with it, pero no pressure kung kunin niya or not after ko matapos pareho.. If di niya kunin and you want to check it out, I'd be more than willing. :)

Good one bro. It's intended to be placed as pictured. Longer side up.

Here's a reference pic of how they're supposed to stack when done.

Hey bro... I've actually been getting a few inquiries already.. Maybe, just maybe, it can push through.. Tapusin ko lang muna itong cab builds ko ngayon so I can sort out the costing.

Still a lot of problem with supplies lalo na pag finishing na.. Tolex, grill cloth, metal coners, etc.. So dun lang talaga sa part na yun magkakatalo, kung ok ba sayo na naka tolex pa or bare (painted) na lang. Hehe.

Pero tingnan natin how my current builds hold up when done. I'll be more than willing for you guys to try out my builds muna bago kayo magpagawa. Haha.

This now has a bass response similar to an 8-inch speaker (average size of speakers times the square root of the number of speakers: (5.25 × 1.4142 = 7.42)

Update..

Since I planned on wrapping the boxes with tolex later on, I needed to apply sanding sealer so the wood won't absorb my adhesive..... While I was at it, I thought to myself, it wouldn't hurt to add the extra effort of staining the wood before applying the sanding sealer. This way, the cab won't look as plain as it was when bare.

I rubbed the first coat of red mahogany (which was actually more brown than red) on the cabs.

Finally, I applied my first coat of sanding sealer... This sealed in the stain, ready to be clearcoated....or I'll just go ahead and cover it with tolex. However, I'm really liking how the cabs look now. Dark and has that antique furniture vibe. I'll probably clear coat it just to preserve this look..

Idol Greg, tingin ko possible yan. Pero sukatin muna natin just to be sure. In some cases, marami room sa baffle at sa mismong enclosure para yung butas na lang ng baffle ang lakihan. Or pwede rin gumawa ng bagong baffle to accomodate the 12" speaker. Pero yun nga, sukatin muna natin. Di kasi ako familiar sa positioning ng insides ng Class 5. :)

mukhang may malalapitan na ako pag nagka budget na rin ako pang cabinet.

Ok siya if you have a spare speaker that needs a cab. :) or if you need a cab with a particular dimension na wala sa mga readily available cabs natin dito sa Pinas. :)

Almost there..... not yet decided on how I'll mount my 1/4" jacks so I haven't routed holes on the back panel yet.

Next step will be finishing the speaker grill mount.

Update.. Almost done.. nearing completion.. :)

I opted to go for single input/output jacks for the cab. I checked the incoming head and it has a provision for two 8ohms cabs simultaneously. Since both of my speakers are 8ohms, I can just run them together with the head. :)

For this build, I'm using a stereo locking jack.

I used crimps for the ease of speaker installation and replacement in case I would want to. I really don't want to solder the wires onto the speaker tabs themselves.

Yeey! Got me a Mesa CL-80 (Celestion Classic Lead 80)..

The other cab will house my Hellatone 60 (Celestion Vintage 30).  :-D

A couple of back shots..

I don't mind them being "naked" cabs. I think they look alright.. But sooner or later, I'll still be covering them for a total clean look.

Aylabet! Those would sound sweet in stereo! Mesa wicker grill cloth would be the best choice for them I think.

Thanks bro. Hope to meet you soon as well. You still have your DSR? I'm itching for a vintage Fender again.. Probably a 50w Blackface Bassman..

Yep still rockin' the dual showman.  T-nuts and spade connectors are a good thing for your builds, man.  On my cabs I remember they were hard to find, but once you have a source, you wonder how earlier builds went by without them.  Another thing is the speaker jack plate, making it look good is worth it, especially if you mix and match frequently.  It also helps if you want more than one jack so you have versatility with daisy chaining or different impedance wiring options.

BTW, if you were going for varnish, perhaps next time try hardwoods?  Makes for more beautiful joinery also if you're going for that look.  I always thought plywood, MDF, etc lends itself well to tolex, but you can get mixed results with finish.  Suggestion also, since some woods take stain rather unevenly and it's hard to balance out the color.  Try filling in the pores with a clear first, and apply stain as a glaze.  Concept is you have a barrier first then stain+clear mix goes over it as one color layer.

Yup. T-nuts and spade connectors are heaven sent! :D

I'm going to cover them with tolex soon bro. I just tinkered with the idea of staining them before applying sanding sealer. So they won't look too naked.

Next time, I'll probably use hardwoods. Solid pine comes to mind for a nice open back 1x12. :)

Interesting that you mentioned applying the sealer first before the actual stain.. in my experience, pag na-seal ko na yung kahoy, ayaw n kumapit ng stain.. hahaha!

Probably sa mga local upholsetry shops lang. It's actually different from the tolex used sa mga amps, pero it will do.. wala yata available locally na tolex na pang amp talaga. Need to order pa sa abroad.

Feel free to visit our place. Or if mapapadaan ako sa area niyo, I'll let you know so I can bring the cab for you to try out.. :)

Pero both cabs, although similarly built, sound different kasi magkaiba speaker. Malaking factor pa rin yung voice ng speaker and goes hand in hand with the design and dimensions of the cab. :)

Hey guys, if you're looking for birch plywood you can try here: http://www.filtratimber.com/

Their facebook page popped in my news feed and upon a friend's inquiry they said they have these sizes in BB/C grade:

3mm x 1525mm x 1525mm
6mm x 1220 x 2440mm
12mm x 1220 x 2440mm
18mm x 1525 x 1830mm

Price for the 18mm board is 3700 plus vat. That's the only price I know dahil yan lang tinanong ng friend ko.  Office nila sa 5F Yupangco building. Of all places!

Happy building!

Bro, thank you for the info.. This is gold for DIYers.. :) But wow, 3700 plus vat for a 5'x6' board.. it's definitely on the premium side.. Need to seriously hone woodworking chops and utilize my tools better before jumping on these.

Haha.

With my last computation, my materials and consumables we're already roughly at the 3,500 mark per cabinet.

Not much update as of late..been out of town the past week and was busy with other stuff. Still waiting for the covering for the amp and finding a suitable grill cloth to complete the look.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Fired up the cabs a few weeks ago on our mini tone party. Will be uploading a video. We used a Laney IRT Studio for a head. :)

Not yet decided if I'll order abroad, use regular cotton cloths, or improvise with other materials.. Been slow with these cab projects lately.. Coz I'm already using them as is in my room. Haha! Cloth must be sonically transparent. Raise the cloth against the light. You should see what is on the other side.

Hey men, sorry to hijack your thread.

No worries bro.. On my very first build, I bought a cotton cloth (black...with white straipes para hindi plain looking). It wasn't too thick, pero hindi rin too thin. Tinupi ko siya para magdouble yung kapal then stretched it very tightly against the baffle para hindi siya mag droop or mag sag or mangulubot.

Haha!

For me, it's more of protection sa mismong speaker from dust and outside elements na pwedeng maka damage sa speaker cone. :)

Pero if ever, you may be looking at around 6-8k for an unloaded 1x12 cabinet.

Black cotton cloth + aluminum screens! \m/

Was looking at one of our doors very closely. As for the rattan chair weave (sulihiya), mixed emotions ako.. I've tried inquiring before sa mga local sulihiya makers sa furniture shops, may required design and thickness sila nung mismong pagmmountan nung sulihiya eh.. Kasi malakas daw tension nun pag ginagawa so important na dapat matibay yung frame.. On a cabinet point of view, hindi masyado maganda to go that route kasi papanget lalo itsura with the oversized and thick grill frame..

Kaso I don't want to spend too much for that.. Looking at more economical options na similarly effective.. :)

Been a long project. Busy towards mid year up until the last quarter. But I managed to finish the cabs around late November.

Slapped a Mesa MC-90 (Celestion Classic Lead 80) in it and she screams with my other heads. Currently using it as a 1x12 cab for a 1987 Marshall Lead 12. Thinking of converting the Marshall combo to a matching head when time permits. :)

Nice!

Thank you sir Marco. Last na muna ito for now. Yung 2x12 na slant naka tengga pa rin. Hahaha.

I still have the same ones, bro. Para kasing nawala na ang GAS ko  during the past 2 years. Seriously. Will inform you guys in advance kung papunta ako dyan.

at anong braces ang ginamit mo? just the regular half inch by half inch?

Re: your paisley grill cloth - Is that tela only? I really like the way it looks.

Yes, it's tela wrapped over the removable grill frame.. Tatlong patong ito na stetched very well para magkaroon ng kapal at stiffness.

Medyo lie low rin ang GAS ko though may pasulpot-sulpot every now and then, just to kill the monotony.  :-D

Yes, I do. Just to fill the small voids and dents sa wood, para pag binalutan or nilagyan ko ng sealer ay closer to flat yung surface. Try mo sir yung ready to apply na wood filler ng Elmer's. Ok rin yun if you plan on covering the cab later on.

For braces, masyado maliit sir and 1/2 x 1/2 inch.. at least 1 x 1 inch or 1 1/2 x 1 inch.. best kung meron 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch.

YKahit yun na lang for the speaker baffle and back panel(s). Haha. Habit ko na lang siguro lagyan pa rin for the extra assurance. Saka sayang yung mga tirang kahoy.

yes yun brace for baffle and back panel lang. iniisip ko kse baka bumigat na yun uno por uno.

Problem rin kasi if masyado maliit yung brace, ang hirap naman pakapitan ng screw from the baffle and back panel. Too close na kasi sa edge.

Ok lang yan sir. Wala rin ako bandsaw or jigsaw.
