Right now, Eric Benet's The Last Time is driving me nuts! It's a great love song with an old-school jazz/swing feel. The drum parts in the recording feel oh so good, and is extremely sensitive to the song. Whenever my band gets to jam this song during our gigs, I feel quite shaky with it.
When I got the chance to check out the album credits from the CD sleeve, I found out that the drummer on that song is Vinnie Colaiuta. Kaya naman pala... :-D

Everybody has their weaknesses. :-D Pero madami talagang mahirap tugtugin. We even have songs that we perform live regularly on gigs na nahihirapan pa rin ako.
Ang madali para kay drummer A, maaaring mahirap para kay drummer B. And vice versa. And I do not know any drummer who can do everything. Vinnie Colaiuta may be the closest to what we can describe as a complete drummer, but I'm sure there's something that he probably can't do... Or maybe haven't had the chance to do yet!
Ang dami pang pwedeng i-aral, pero di ko pa nata-try. Hilaw ang brush playing ko. Di ko pa na-try mag-left foot clave. I can't play double bass as fast as Virgil Donati. Even the thought of learning and playing-along to Tool's music scares me. But it's okay. Facing challenges are good. At bata pa naman tayo, marami pang mga taon at pagkakataon na matuto pa.

Yup, ditto on that. Kumbaga, kapag nagtra-training tayo magdrums, dun lumalabas yung talagang trademark natin na sound diba? every drummer creates his own fingerprint kahit na anong level pa yan. I remember one time, sa sobra closeness namin na group dito sa dagupan, when you arrive at our studio, you can actually identify who is playing the drums. kahit asa malayo ka pa lang. :lol:

And I consider that as an asset - a musician who has his/her own style and sound. As an artist, I'm trying to develop my personal style. Ika nga, what's the point of being an artist and expressing my individuality if I'm just gonna keep on imitating? Sana ma-achieve natin ito someday.

nung una nahirapan ako seprahin yung judith ng apc. it was my first time to actually play a sort of syncopated song. as in 3 weeks ko sya na constant na sinepra. until finally dahil sa pressure, nakuha ko rin.
alert the armory by urbandub makes me shudder sa live kasi di ko pa masyado na work-out independence ng kamay ko sa feet ko.
tool songs sumasakit ang ulo ko kasi d-peds sya. di pa ako marunong mag d-peds (paging jp!)

ngayon ko lang na-realize na mahirap pala ang Counting Blue Cars ng Dishwalla.
kayang kunin kung note per note pero ang hirap kunin yung feel. :oops:
any suggestions? balak ko na lang simplehan yung palo dun eh. :|

hehe. naliligo na nga siya ng ghost notes kaso parang di pa rin kuha yung vibe nung kanta.
pansin ko lang kasi very lively yung drum pattern niya kahit medyo mellow yung ibang parts nung kanta pero pasok.
Siguro more work na lang sa dynamics and proper timing.

malamang. aralin mo mabuti yung kanta not just the drum part tulad ng sabi ni drumster nung mini-eb namin. you have to learn the whole song not just the drums to really feel the dynamics of the song. malaking pagbabago nangyari sa palo ko simula nung sinabi nya yun. kya if i were you, i'd go to the eb's to learn not just the tchniques but the attitude

Yeah. I do get what you're saying.
Kasi se-session lang ako sa isang band and may gig sila this coming weekend. I don't normally hear their line-up of songs including yung Counting Blue Cars kaya ngayon ko palang siya dinadama. Kaya panay ko siyang pinapakinggan everywhere just to get the mood of the song.

Recently gusto ng jamming session party ung mga officemates ng erpat ko.... tapos ung isa dun sa mga tutugugin eh ung "touch me" ng the doors.... pucha.... kala mo madali pero bigla na lang sumasabit... try listening to it.... and up to now I still can't get the chorus of rosanna! ehehehehe... pinagaaralan ko na nga ung fool in the rain muna ng led zeppelin eh... para makuha ko ung purdie shuffle.... ayun.... gusto ko talaga matutunan un eh... kasi gusto ko maincorporate ung shuffle na un sa isa sa mga compo namin... at siguro try ko na rin gumawa ng sarili kong hybrid nun! ehehehehe! I've been into that stuff kasi pansin ko masyado ko na binababad sarili ko sa funk, rock at reggae ska....

Isa pang comment ko, napapansin ko kasi, drummers tend to forget other genres like Pop and R&B, porke rockers tayo, we won't like the songs na. I suggest you listen to most of the Pop and R&B tunes today, lalo na sa R&B kasi diversed na yung genre nila. Kala mo simple lang mga palo nila, yun pala, it takes more than just skills to play these things. Hindi lang basta tug-pak-tug-tug-pak. Kung minsan meron yung certain emotion na kelangan mo ilagay dun sa song para ma-feel ng audience yung song. Remember, we are the core of the band. Kapag sumabit tayo, for sure sabit na rin ang mga kasama natin.

i've heard of it na rin, customized ang pedal nya eh. kaya ganon. hirap gawin kapag hindi exact ang pedal mo sa kanya. it takes skill talaga hehehe....pero sabi nga ni jpmb about double peds, if you know how to count 1-4, you can do any doublepeds with practice. hehehe....
