Title: Is the piccolo fad DEAD?
Post by: skunkyfunk on February 19, 2007, 10:38:06 AM
I just wonder... I might sell my 14x3.5 Tama Maple piccolo before the fad ends... so I won't get BARAT-ed...  :-D

personally, im tired of the piccolo sound. i want a beefier, snappier snare sound (like the ones in the latest tori amos album),  the piccolo sounded great in rhcp and 90's grunge songs.  these days im just wishing i had the dough for a pork pie. :(  this is for live purposes btw, as drum replacement these days is always a cinch.

Drum replacement is the most abused endeavor of digital recording, in this country at least.

Piccolos are probably good for ska...

I believe it did become a fad.... though for a short time... during my early years as a drummer other drummers usually tell me piccolo drums are the bomb... and I liked the sound of it especially that the genre of my band was ska... and I saw a lot of drummers carrying one during gigs... my father bought me a tama piccolo snare, the tama hand hammered steel shell soprano snare... its very different from other piccolos... it has a more darker sound.... and I use it as my primary snare....

maybe it is already dead... today I don't see much drummers carrying those thin piccolo snares... now its more on.... Joey Jordison snares and ah... hmmm... Joey Jordison snares? ehehehe....

Even though Im a guitarist I am really into drums... I think that it did become the talk of the town in regards to drum sounds but its not really a fad... maybe its just that there were times wherein someone was using it and really made a mark...
Robert frm Skychurch used them in the 90's and that sound became a sort of standard for metal bands...  but then again it also sounds good in other types of music...

Its not a fad... maybe you'll find a good use for your piccolo snare sometime soon...

the picollos will still be around and there are drummers who will still prefer this..aside from its portablity, it has its unique sound..maybe it just so happened that there are more choices of snare sizez now that is available locally..i myself is a proud owner of a 14x8 vinnie paul signature snare but there are times i still miss the sound of a picollo snare..cheers..

the piccolo sounded great in rhcp and 90's grunge songs.
Which is weird, coz RHCP the sikat na grunge bands just used 14x5-6in snares but tuned real high and not too muffled (thus the overtone). And they hit the snares real hard.

Piccolo snares don't sound good used in Soundgarden songs tho. Only because Matt Cameron tuned his snare juusssst right :)

Ako i have the Pearl Maple Picolo 13x3. I bought it kasi well "Picolo" sha. You know what i mean? Malakas ang dating sa tao pag nakita nila na Picolo gamit mo. Hehehe. I love the sound of my Picolo pero can't compare sa Powers ng mga deep snares ko.
Eto mga reasons ko why i use the Picolo.
1. Madali shang i transport kasi maliit.
2. It sounded compressed kaya sa mga maliliit na venues ok sha.
3. I can switch to a high tight sound (coated ambs) to quite low compressed sound (pinstripes) snare sounds.

Ser Yes Ser!

Yun sa Bandaroon at sa Fastbreak...este Breakfast.

Evans Hydraulics head for toms and bass to compensate for that one headed drum and shallow bass drum.

the bass drum is a great asset in the Rhythm Traveller.  Its kicks and punches with good tone.  Well, at least to my taste.

Brader Dindin kasi sobrang baba ng bid eh. :-D

Piccolo not dead yet. we drummers at the showband scene still prefer it's portability and range.

I just hope that piccolos are still favorable for drummers...'coz i just got one and medyo mahal kuha ko...i don't want to have my money wasted to something na hindi na cool....well anyway, i still enjoy the sounds it's making so cool pa din ako sa piccolo ko...

Tama yan... the first thing that you should consider when buying gear is that you like the sound it makes.
Don't let fads or other people convince you that it sounds good, pero sa iyo, tunog pangit... ikaw din talo niyan.
