Title: Will being in a professional band change your life?
Post by: skunkyfunk on March 10, 2007, 10:07:41 PM
I dunno, but I'm offered to play guitar for a band... medyo seryosohan ang gigs eh.  Maybe lagare and at first talagang ty lang.  I have a family and I just think nasa "gustong-ayaw" ako na stage.  Whatyathink?

If it pays better than your day job then why not? Otherwise, meh...

That can only happen when you're famous. But it's the rite of passage before getting famous I am worried about.

probably...but I still wouldn't give up a dayjob.

Bands come, and go.

Most of the enduring bands do have other sidelines...hmmm...The Dawn comes to mind, Rivermaya members engage in business, Louie Talan's got a recording studio...etc.

They're right. Don't give up your day job first. Even rock icons in the country have sidelines as well. If you can do them both, why not? Hindi naman siguro stressful kung gusto mo ginagawa mo diba?

There's comes a point in when your band becomes 'too busy' that you have to pick between your day job and your passion. You're going to have to weigh in how much cash these two professions bring in. And eventually, you would have to pick just one...

I have never had a day job in my whole life yet coz I've been playing professionally since I was 18. Our guitarist tried having a day job during our early years, but constant touring, recordings, and gigs made him quit it. Even one of our vocalists had to 'temporarily' take a leave of absence because he had to attend to their family business. I also had my own business a few years ago, but I had to close it down because I didn't have the time to attend to it.

Being in a pro band is no joke. Practices, recordings, meetings, gigs, etc etc. It's like having a day job too, albeit something different. There will also be times that gigs will be scarce. Here, having a steady income (like a day job) will be very helpful.

I believe, if it will change your life, the decision will be up to you. If you have the guts to go up the stage, then I think you deserve all the limelight you get...

Very well said sir, from a Pro's point of view.

OT: Family business pala rason ni vinci kung bakit wala sya parati nun. Kala ko college matters  Some say he quit totally pa nga eh.

Laki talaga pagbabago kung pro ka na, pero kung sa tingin mo worth it ang mga sacrifices mo, go ahead.

Ako nga wish ko pa rin maging Pro, kaso i think fate has a bitter way of biting life.

That's nice. naisip ko lang, pano kaya yung mga gusto mag-pro but don't have the funds or connections to do it, pero may skills talaga sila? I don't think they would risk their day job for gambling to be pro?

OT: Sir Dindin, is that a Joey Joridson snare? Di ko ma-recognize, malayo masyado pic hehehe....

ayun! AMEN ser.
Also one of the reason kung bakit napakadaming magagaling na musikero ang hindi sumisikat. pero at least ok naman ang pamumuhay, kuntento na din sa mga pa-jamjam, kahit once-a-month gig, etc. :-)

mga reasons din siguro kung bakit di sumikat sikat ang mga bands kahit na may talents is siguro wala din silang  songs na many people can relate or melodies and lyrics na ppol can sing along with or maybe wala yung luck wala sa side nila...

our band's not even "professional" and the experience already has a profound effect on my life.

band's been in existence for just one and a half years now.  since we have day jobs, we gig about once or twice a month, spend time (and money - ack!) recording weekends.

what do you expect to get in return for investing your time and other resources for the band?  what level of committment are you willing to give for your band?  in our case, i think it's a good thing that we're not at all taking everything too seriously.  not out for fame, or the money. just a chance to express ourselves.

i also had a similar dillemma when i first joined this band.  i was concerned that if i started jamming, and then gigging, i wouldn't be able to stop myself from devoting my fullest attention to the band, to the point of making work (and other responsibilities, such as family) a mere second priority.

being in my band gives me an outlet, a break from the monotony of work.  because we're not a "professional" band, there's no pressure.  playing pays for itself - it doesn't matter if we spend on our rigs and spend on rehearsal/studio time and recording time and at the end of the day, play gigs for free, long as we get to play.  my point is, you find something that you want to do in life, the opportunity presents itself, (with a chance of getting compensated financially) then you should pounce on it.  you'll never regret it.  otherwise you'll be old and gray and thinking about that day when you decided not to join a band and what could've been had you acted another way.  if you do join and it doesn't work out for you, heck at least you gave it a shot.

my two cents.

What change are you after? I mean is it for good? You still will decide how it will turn out. You have to weigh things first and Dindin already mentioned most of them.

I've had several offers since I was 14 to be in bands but I turned them down knowing myself enough that the music that I want to play isn't marketable and gauging that there's a stiff chance that I'll make it. (Pessimism, I guess.) Also, even if I liked what they're playing I've never had any intentions of ever making it in the music business.

At any rate skunky, I wish you well. Sana okay yung offer sa iyo.  :-)
