It all comes down to skill and diskarte around the kit. Ganito kasi yun. Experience maybe a factor but not all the times. Lalo na yung mga hindi disiplinado pumalo. Meaning, fill in dyan, fill in duon kahit hindi bagay basta maipakita na may skill sya. Ampanget naman nun diba? Tsaka mostly ng experienced drummers try to innovate the song, disiplina lang talaga katapat.
My story with my former drummer....
He was drumming for our band since 2000, ako kelan lang, 2004 i think. And nung huling uwi nya, i can say we have our own different approach to the kit. Usap-usapan lang, asar-asaran, pero you can never really compare a drummer with another because their different approach will always be expressed on the drums. No matter how long have you played, if you had lessons or not.
It all boils down to one word....Diskarte.

the exprienced one will probably have better taste, better communication with his mates, feel, tone, etc....most qualities that aren't learned inside the bedroom.

good one!
when he jams, he can look at the bassist and guitarist and know that there will be a chord change after the next two bars...

Yes! We only acquire skills by studying, but learn thru experience.
..there's a big difference between knowledge &wisdom

Very very well-said!! 8-)

uhhh....pwede both?
+1,000,000
Pero another question, what if he has the knowledge and wisdom pero wala pa ring discipline sa palo?
-
It all boils down to kung fu. :-D

just to add:
i think a beginning but talented drummer will definitely overplay... you can tell cause sobrang complicated ng mga isisingit na fills nun, kahit na all by myself ni Celine Dione ang tugtugin. usually ang result nyan is that he will make everyone look bad, hehe.
an experienced drummer will know what to do more... he is so good with what he does, you wont notice him when you are the audience... pero if you are the band, everybody will have a great time cause sobrang ganda ng time nyo... salpak talaga ang mga guitar solos, grooving talaga ang bass line and iisipin ng tao naang galing ng vocalist. little do they know, naging mas magaling lang ang vocalist na yan dahil disiplinado ang band behind him.

-
pag bata mas pasikat? :-D
-
para sakin siguro yung fast learner mas mabilis maging experiennced, kasi yung hindi fast learner takes long time to be experienced so mas aangat ang fast learner in short period of time, but iba ang experienced di lang musical, mental kung di sa puso o pakikisama, dito na nagkakatalo...GodBless

well there are times when "looking" or "gesturing" needs the right interpretation...especially from the vox.

eh what if:
and
5 years (experienced, self taught, laging may gig)
what can you say guys?
-
What if it's a loose band, a jam band with loose arrangements? There is no better teacher than experience. Only then can you know what your "mates" are about to pull out of their hats and only then can you know what to play behind them. Experience over study for me...

eh what if:
not if you haven't heard the song yet and were asked to jam. I'm always put in this friggin' spot!
specially the ending of the song...I stay alert for the "senyas".

id go for this 5 years (experienced, self taught, laging may gig) << khit wala cyang alam na technique...
why? in this category... you have discipline... you have taste... you have the sense of knowing what your bandmates are doing during a jam... <<< this is where no drum instructor can teach you these types of disciplines... nasa experience yan...
marami akong kilala na drum instructors... one of the best na rin mga nakilala ko... magaling sila sa licks and technical patters... all that stuff... kaso hirap silang i apply pag kasama na banda... laging nagkakamali, hindi alam gagawin sa jam... mga essentials in being a good drummer .... wala
kaya better yet... practice both ...

Pag walang discipline, considered na walang wisdom :-D
Let's face it! Madaming drummer na mahaba ang experience at malawak ang skills pero they seem to have not learned to apply them appropriately. Yun ang lack of wisdom.
But I dont want to sound dogmatic or conceited naman. Lahat naman tayo, at some point in our life get overwhelmed by our egoistic tendencies, kaya nawawalan ng disiplina.

kaya better yet... practice both ...
ayon! :-)
