Title: your practice amp and opinion
Post by: burnthyfret on August 11, 2007, 11:11:56 PM
what do you guys use as your practice amp? i'm using a marshall cdr, the mg series.. honestly.. i don't think it's that bad as a practice amp but for the overdrive/distorted tones.. i dont believe i can rely on the amp alone and i seriously need to be clinging on to my pedals.. in other word, i don't think it's that good or is it?  :x

how about you guys?

try out the ZOOM FIRE-15 amp.

meron na cyang built in digital effects processor (metal distortion, blues, acoustic simulator, reverb, chorus, etc.) so hassle free na kung practice amp lang. para cyang may built in na ZOOM 505II sa loob and a built in chromatic tuner kasi may LCD cya. :)

love it.

I'm an acoustic player.. so acoustic practice amp ang akin. 15w na Oscar Schmidt (kasama sa package).
Frankly, I'm not satisfied with it. Mas natural yung tone ko kapag DI sa sound system.

I'm thinking of getting either a DI box or a new acoustic amp. :-)

For electric guitar amps.. the only one that really pleased me (then again, baka settings lang).. was the Behringer AC108. Hybrid amp siya.

zoom 7010 fire

- loud enough.
- with built-in effects. decent for a practice amp. may tuner na kaso lang metronome.
- folding speaker
- and most of all, portable. kasyang kasya sa pedal board.

Ehehe!!! Meron ako nito dati. Sold it for 1.8k :-D to a fellow forumite from Rizal yata. It was good but I overgrew it and had to change it to MG50DFX. At first I thought I could only use the clean channel. But now I'm directly plugging my guitar and use the OD channel for classic rock tones. I have a BOSS ME-33 but I guess I fell in love with the amps dirt channel... Somehow it hits the tone I have in mind.

i had a Marshall 20 watt valvestate ...

i ddnt shop and try on that many practice amps, but what can i say? that amp kept me from GAS for more than 5 years. it never farts even at full volume, and you dont hear any cracking like those japanese surplus amps. at room volume, the valvestate can make you feel as if you emulated the sound coming from pantera, slayer and metallica records - of course it is not close... but still, if you dont know any better, you'd think you are close (then you go to onstage and realize you dont have the power to match the un-miked drummer).

the only reason why i sold it was because i got me a 100 watt b52... its similar to the Marshall Valvestate, only louder and you can really feel those bass notes pumping out of your speakers (something practice amps have a difficulty doing). i believe the b52 is a very good marshall clone...

i'm using the same amp as yours. so far, i like the way it sounds. maganda sya pang praktis. gusto ko ung reverb nya lalo na pag clean although yung dirt channel nya di ganun kaganda. pedals pa rin talaga gamit ko pang distortion.

i use a 15 (or 10)?watt ibanez amp (ever seen one of these? i cant find a similar model in stores) for cifra and mechanical exercise purposes. i dont think i need to be loud in front of my computer. it also helps promote the peace and good diplomatic relations with my nieghbors during the unholy hours. i plug my guitar on a korg px4 for the metronome or maybe some dirt and modulation in this little amp. nothing fancy in it. it actually sucks tone wise. for practice with the band, (during the daytime of course) i use a peavey classic 50 tube amp. On gigs, i use whatever is on the venue. (try lifting a tweed/tube amp the size of a 30' television set 3x a week and you'll know what i mean.)

+1 on plugging acoustic guitars into the PA system. sounds more natural and more 3d. although i like the idea of an acoustic amp serving as a monitor, especially if the pa system or monitors are crappy.

it's despicable actually... although nung naghahanap ako ng practice amp di na talaga ako masyado nag isip.. nag A/B lang ako nung MG15 tska MG10... the 15 sounded a lot better kaya yun na kinuha ko. reverb pa rin talaga ung nagustuhan ko. ang warm ng tunog.

I have a fender bronco 15 watter and another 15 watter fender SL-15 both are good but have their own characteristics altho i should get a strat kase sayang yung tweed tone ng bronco... :-D

Planning to get Marshalls this time, ok kaya yung MG's?  Been hearing some very bad reviews, I think i should stick with valvestates....

Oh and one more thing don't ever get those Behringer AC108's gumagaralgal yung speaker... kainis...

I'm surprised except for Randymarsh, no one uses an Epi Valve Jr. It's 5 Watts Class A, a simple amp that you can use for learning about tube amps too. If you have the inclination, mod it yourself. But even stock, this inexpensive little amp rocks. I just got myself the head version and have been using it with my Traynor 1X12 cab. I've had fun using it.

Maybe you and some other folks who are interested in the amp can ask the Epi dealer there to bring them in.

BTW, the amp is also a good platform for modding.
