though the topic seems to fit the music school section better, here goes anyway-

i have little time for intense practice, coz my sched it erratic. however, i believe that if you are passionate about the music, there is NO EXCUSE to slack off and keep yourself in form. Its just like working out.

Although the term "systematic" may convey a negatve connotation (boring, repetitive), there has to be a system of sorts. What is music, anyway, but logically arranged sounds?

IMHO, there are two types of practice-

1. the physical (with your instrument)
2. the mental (passively with the instrument or without it)

all practice has to start with a goal, and a determined mindset to achieve that. I'll only pick up the instrument with a purpose. a god determined, goal centric 15mins is way better than a 10hr marathon of meandering.

physically, it is important to stretch to avoid injuries and warm up your body (there is more, much much more to playing the guitar than just moving your fingers). I good stretch relaxes your whole being and improves focus. I only practice standing, as it is easier to achieve balance on your feet than sitting. it is hard to find a proper balance on your butt, unless you have a stool to raise your left foot on. plus, who wants to watch a rockstar rock on a chair

i rarely do chromatic warm ups, though is see the physical benefits it has on your coordination, i like to work on synchronizing my movement with harmonic and rhythmic ideas, because that is what you will be confronted with in a live setting. i enjoy the quirky stuff more, like the whole tone, half whole and melodic minor.

i probably would work through intervals, diatonically, in all directions starting with 2nds, then thirds etc etc. as a linear player, it helps me and my ear. i would probably then extend them, as triads and triad pairs, quartals, open intervals and other stacked possibilities.

then, finish by working on how i can incorporate them on tunes, without them sounding like exercises. all that on a good few hours if i have downtime on weekend.

head wise, i always travel listening to music. both critically and for pleasure. on the street, i'll think guitar. at work, i'll think guitar. i'll hear something, or think up of something, take note of it, then work it out.

I wish someone could share notes from Perfclinic II where Perf shared a 15minute practice routine that's practically guaranteed to improve your chops.

Paging ibanezman, progressive_pilipinas, kawayan_strat, namida, etc...

Or maybe we can reconstruct it from memory by posting here... :-)

Ako may notes hehehehe

15 minute technical practice routine:

1) Right Hand (no left hand)

- Alternate picking, consecutive strings: 4 strokes/string, then 3 strokes, then 2 then 1 (2 mins)
- Alternate picking, string skipping: sames strokes as above (2 mins)
- Sweep picking (1 min)

2) Left Hand: (picked, all hammer-on/pull-off, or combination)

- Chromatic scale (1 min)
- Pentatonic (2 mins)
- Diatonic (2 mins)
- Arpeggio/Chord shapes (2 mins)

3) Specialized drills/learning new material: 3 mins

Sample routine:

1) RH
- Alternate picking consecutive
- Alternate picking string skipping: 3 notes per string, skip 2 strings
- RH Sweep picking pattern: C form arpeggio

2) LH
- Chromatic scale start at 5th fret move up to 12th fret, 16th notes @ 70bpm
- All Pentatonic boxes in Bbm sequenced in 4ths, 16th notes @ 80bpm
- 3 notes per string Mixolydian scale shape, start at 5th fret move up to 12th fret, triplet 8th notes at 100bpm
- C form arpeggio, start at 5th fret move up to 12th fret, 8th notes at 120bpm

3) Specialized drills/learning new material: Pick one

- new scale pattern/sequence
- new arpeggio pattern/sequence
- new fingerpicking pattern/sequence
- new licks
- bending/intonation exercise
- new technique

RULES:

1) Stick to one scale/arpeggio pattern/sequence per week, change patterns every week
2) Work on new materials/techniques for at least 2 weeks before incorporating in LH or RH sections
3) Be consistent and dedicate 15 minutes of your time everyday to this routine. You cannot make up for a missed practice  session by practicing 30minutes the next day. You can miss one practice session but not more than 2 consecutive practice sessions.
4) If you have more than 15 mins to play on any particular day, start with this routine and after which you can play whatever you want for the remainder of your "guitar time".

Good luck!

Yikes! Now a days Im so lazy that I rarely pick up the guitar at home...

But this is what I used to do and should be doing na again...

Sometimes I would just pick out a subject that I'd like to improve on.

I'd look for materials on the net or if I have old printed materials I'd look for

something about the subject...

I would try to digest the lesson then practice what Ive learned then apply it

parang jam ba...

Duration of my routine will depend on how tough the subject is...

the 1st hour chromatic exercise from GW: steve vai's 10 hour workout

6 minutes(plus one minute rests in between): trills.....left hand 1st and 2nd finger for one minute, kasabay ang metronome, rest one minute then do the same with other 2 finger sets:

1-3(one minute)   1-4(1 min.)   2-3(1min)  2-4(1 min)  3-4(1min)

alternate picking.....go up a scale pattern in triplets,4s,5s and 6s....

1234,2345,3456,4567, etc....is an example going up the scale degrees in 4s...ideally used for 16th notes quadruplets

triplets would be 123,234,345,456 etc....in which case you should be focused on picking...each string starts on a different stroke(up,down).

then do the same patterns with legato phrasing

bale parang scale exercises sa hanon

i dont do sweeps, well just in one direction....i doarpeggios with alternate picking and string skipping...

i read that vitto bratta spends an hour practicing solos and then three hours on chords and rhythm playing.
