Dude,

Parehas lang yan with the old SMART BRO [gooey brown stuff]. Difference lang parang cellphone yung USB type. Problem: Sobrang bagal ng connection ng SMART Bro. Search the internet first about SMART Bro and read all the bad comments and problems around their connection. Well, I'm one of their victim. The first few weeks would give that smile dude, but after that it will be your worst decision ever. Try to veer away from wireless and find a wired connected internet provider. Better yet, if your area have a Destiny Cable Internet go for it. I get connection speeds up to 2meg. Downloading a 4Gig torrent file only takes me overnight, from 12mn to 7am. I'm not from Destiny, or even an endorser. I'm just very happy with their service, and simply helping you make the right choice.

Hope this helps.

hehehee...prang endorser ka pre... :-D

im using mydestiny cablenet din...kaka install lang last week(friday)....

hindi ako lumagpas sa 512kbps!

and they promised na i will hit 2mbps lalo na pag madaling araw? nye!

tsk tsk...

Nope. Sa amin meron. I think depende siguro sa dami ng recievers in an area kaya bumabagal. Sa bahay i think 3 lang kami naka smart bro in the neighborhood and mabilis naman. I just dunno about the wireless.

Foota, 6k binabayaran ko buwan-buwan sa shop ko for a speed 2x of a dial-up.

I am on SmartBro for my home internet needs. No big-time problems encountered running on 2nd year, except when once the signal dropped and it was discovered that new buildings being constructed were in the way of our canopy's line of sight with that of the base station. I connect via wifi; 3 households within the compund share the connection, for a total of 6 users (cousins) at a given time, mixed platforms: laptop, desktop, cell phone.

As for the USB connection, the difference is that you can theoretically connect via wifi from any location that has a Smart (cel) signal.

Prior to the USB model for laptops, one can connect on the internet using a cell phone on Smart (sim) as modem, either via cel-to-USB cable or bluetooth, and you'd be charged P10/30mins, but the speed, according to those who I know have used it, leaves much to be desired, not to mention that it was a big cell phone battery-resource hog.

Direct dsl connection is still the most stable and consistent, no doubt.

Minsan, wala talagang choice kung hindi available ang landline, e, like in our case (Fairview, QC). Still, it affords me and my family to connect decently and have fun on the side downloading music and videos, and uploading/downloading work-related files.

If anyone really wants a fast and stable connection, go Eastern Telecoms. True fiber-optic speeds which I have tried, but the availability in terms of location is limited. There's one internet shop along Matalino street, Q.C. near the Sulo Hotel that has it.

I just moved and had to let go of my trusty PLDT DSL... now I'm using SmartBro. Can anyone tell me how to configure my router for this? I've already tried 'cloning' my MAC address to no avail.

yup! meron. that does seem to be the problem kaya sabi ng installer sa LAN dapat nakapasok ang smart. want to experiment adding a new user sa portal pero I don't know what that will entail (medyo nasa cost cutting measures ako ngayon).

also have other computer accessing router via wifi pero won't connect. i've tried changing IPs to reflect new smart config pero no go.

try mo lang to..heheh! open mo ung portal while connected ung pc directly sa smart bro..tapos pag open na ung portal disconnect mo ung pc then kabit mo

sir try mo power cycle (turn off pc then router after a few minutes turn on router first then pc)

Looks like a lot of misconceptions about these modems - it's basically a HSDPA modem, so it uses the Smart 3G/HSDPA network - max speeds depend on what kind of network you're connected to in your location. This can be either GPRS, EDGE, 3G, or HSDPA (also known as 3.5G). Same technology used by PLDT WeRoam and Globe Visibility.

3G goes up to 384kbps, while HSDPA goes up to 1.5 or 2mbps in the Philippines. (The ZTE MF622 modem used by Smart Bro is rated at a max of 7 mbps).

Expect bigger HSDPA coverage/speed in Mega Manila this year.

I have one that I use when travelling. It's faster and more stable than using a 3G phone as a modem.

Chette's home setup is a SmartBro (Motorola canopy) connection shared via a DLink Wi-Fi router ... for about 2-3 years already. What's your setup Kit?

I want to help but I've forgotten what I did to get mine (D-Link + SmartBro) up and running. I don't remember having any problems by just following the router setup instructions.  Nung lumipat naman ako from SmartBro to BayanDSL the other day, wala ring problem sa lipat, altho ung tech na gumawa.

what if i'll be using it in an environment without 3G signal? will it still work?

It'll latch on to GPRS or EDGE which is about 56K (GPRS) to 128K (EDGE).

Sigh... I'm beginning to think the problem is with my router (Allied Telesyn AT-APR54BG). I was able to enter it's configuration options only once since I moved to my new house although in my previous house, setup was a breeze. For some strange reason, IP assignment does not get repaired when I'm using the first port of the router and the standard 192.168.xxx.xxx only comes out when the SB modem is in port 1; the other ports give me 169.xxx.xxx.xxx which is strange. I'll try some brute force methods by manually assigning my IP, using a different pc, etc....  :x

Yep, I think it's about 3 or4 years old na. Ang tibay, no fuss, plus it's moddable thru open source firmware upgrades if you want to go in that direction.

wow! how ironic! hehehe!

i've been in this company for almost 4years now and that WRT54g series is the still the number 1 and undisputed worst router Linksys has ever produced! (I'm bashing my own brand! hahaha!)

honestly, i won't recommend it to my friends. We almost got sued because of that device.

Good thing it works for you Sir, there are a lot of third party firmwares out there and customers still goes that way even if it voids the warranty.

Dunno why they like Linksys that much!

For wireless routers i'd go for a D-Link DI-624 AirPlus Xtreme G or a Belkin one..

i won't recommend any Linksys products Sir. Yoko mapahiya. heheh!
