The band's singer, Chino Moreno, reached by phone, confirmed the news but declined to give specifics.
"I don't know everything that's going on — I just know it's very serious," Moreno told The Sacramento Bee. "I'm on my way to be with his family, I'm pretty freaked out about it."
Cheng, 38, was born in Stockton and also is an accomplished poet. In 2000, he released a CD of his poetry, "The Bamboo Parachute".
