I've been told that the Behringers are good. They may not hold up to AKGs, Sonys et al, but they're good for starters.
Sonar 4.04PE/5.2PE/7.02PE/8.31 PE, Project 5 v2.5.1, EmulatorX 1.5, Cubase SL2, Ableton Live 7.14,  Intel Q6600 MSI P43 Neo 4Gb Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2-800, Emu 1820m, Yamaha DSP Factory, Terratec DMX 6fire

akg's aren't too expensive as to be oppressive, even locally.. so i'd recommend one of those. i use them for dj'ing too. i used to use behringers but when driven they started sounding brittle and crackly so i gave up on those. akg's sound great but the cups sort of rest on your ear rather than around them so they may not be too comfortable for longer sessions. sony's meanwhile seem to make your ears sweat like mad... have a go with different brands to see what suits you

Behringers. Cheap yet decent. :-D

I would recommend the following based on experience:

SONY MDR 7560 (I use when recording live sound, i.e. dialogues and ambient sounds)
Etymotic ER4 (for mixing) ER6 (for my iPod)
M-Audio IE 40 and Q40 (for mixing)

Just my reco.

Cheers.

I prefer to have 2 types: closed back (like my Sennheiser HD280 Pro) for isolation - good for tracking and when you don't want to hear ambient noise, and open backed (AKG K240) for a more natural listening experiance - not good for tracking since the bleed is noticeable thru the open back. Another closed back that I've been targeting is the Audio Technica ATH M40fs or the newer ATH M50.

affordable?  try the ath m20.  that's what i've been usin ever since i started.  very comfy on the ears even for long bouts.  the very thin leatherette's my only issue with the thing, it just crumbles away at some point.

i've also been usin the akg 77.  but it's a bit of a tight fit, for me at least.  the back of my ears get sore after a couple of hours.  the circumaural akg's fit better, although they do get pricy.

either one's a cheap buy.
