suggest a snare
« on: January 16, 2009, 01:03:54 AM »
i need help determining the size of the snare in the picture below (please click):

i'm not sure if it's a 13" or 14". all i know is it has a height of 7" and that it's a premier maple classic snare.

after determining the size of it, i need suggestions on similarly-sized maple snares available locally. kahit anong brand, basta parehong dimensions (13x7 or 14x7). w/ prices sana.

salamat po.

Medyo mahirap makahanap ng 14x7 or 13x7...
But, you can never go wrong with a 14 x 6.5.
There are a lot of choices at that size.
There is the Gretsch Renown Maple, Black Panthers, Dennis Chambers, or Mapex Pros... Prices range from 15-30k++

Try to visit TMS(The Music Source) where a wide array of Mapex Black Panther & Mapex Pro Snares are available.

It would be a good idea to call first and try to schedule a meet with Robert dela Cruz who is the in-store specialist.  He can show and explain your options on size and finish and make suggestions...then again at the end its your ears that will tell you what sound you are looking for.

Give them a call, it may be worth your while & investment.

sir dindin, thank you for posting some of the models you have in mind. i'll be checking them out. i currently have a 14x5.5 mapex pro-m snare, it's ok for its price point and the sound is good, but now i want something a step up in size and sound. siguro pang midrange lang price ko, since i'm still not generating my own income... maybe up to 20k.

lupit yang si martin lopez! astig yang opeth lamentations dvd..

pagkatapos mo itanong, binalikan ko ung dvd.. comparing dun sa mga toms, it looks like a 13.  and based on this thread http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-2377.html , mukang 13x7 nga kasi ung second set nila dun sa dvd is mostly from the damnation album...

Meron atang sonor force na 13x7. normally mga 13x6 at 13x6.5. You can also go the custom route from our local builders :-)

Yung akira jimbo snare pala 13x7...

@sir phfreq
yep number 1 favorite drummer/influence ko talaga si martin lopez. groove, feel, brutality all in one. medyo nabawasan pagiging adik ko sa opeth dahil iba na drummer nila. :P

yes nag-google narin ako. may nagsasabing 13, may nagsasabing 14. tapos nung kinompare ko relatively based sa length ng stick at nung snare, mukhang 14 e. at kung titignan mabuti, mas malaki ng onti yung snare kesa sa right rack tom, mukha lang ata parehong 13" kasi nakakaloko yung "circle" border sa snare head. hehe.

pero hindi parin ako 100% sure talaga. haha.

ayun, so far, nasa listahan ko na pinagpipilian gretsch renown maple, tama artwood, or pearl masters mcx. 14x6.5 size. di ko kaya yung medyo may kamahalan na snare e, midrange lang kasi budget.

hmm pwede sana custom made, kaso maple snare talaga gusto ko e, para versatile. hindi kasi ako mahilig bumili ng gear, gusto ko yung snare na pwede kahit anong genre. that's the reason why i looked to the opeth dvd for inspiration, pwede kasi snare niya for soft playing as well as hard.

thanks for the suggestion though. i really appreciate the replies. ;)

I think, 13" yan.
anong tunog po ba yun? malalaman rin kasi sa tunog yung size eh.

syet, ngayon maghahanap ulit ako ng snare na 13x6.5/13x7.

ok, forumers, please name 13x6.5/13x7 snares available locally. preferably maple, pero anything's fine. thanks.

may black panther na 13" x 6" (close enough) na maple. very nice drum, and not as expensive as other panthers (it's less than 20k, maybe in the 15-17k range). probably your best bet in size, quality, and availability.

tama:
may 13"x6.5" metalworks, kaso steel yun (anlayo sa maple). i don't think tama has ever done a 13" that deep in maple. starclassic b/b may 13"x6.5" kaso di ako sure sa availability.

yamaha:
the akira jimbo is 13"x7" kaso (a) 6 lugs per side lang siya, dubious para sa snare yun and (b) yupangco pa magkakaroon nito?

pearl:
may reference 13"x6.5" snare kaso (a) i haven't seen one here and (b) 6 lugs a side din. and there's the jj snare, kaso... meh.

may kakilala ako dati na may ddrum 13"x7" maple. maganda rin naman. i doubt na dito niya nakuha.

Punta ka ng Audiophile Ali Mall Cubao. I saw a Tama Superstar 13x6 Snare.
Ganda ng kulay, black mist ata tawag dun na lacquered. Die cast hoops.
Birch/basswood nga lang ang shell. Ganda ng construction.
About sa price, hindi ko natanong e. Bagong dating lang daw yun.
So ayun..  :wink:

... but i posted on the tama thread that i don't like the jj snare (ghey decals; tribal is so 2002), nor jj's band. XD

not because they're not "metal enough", i just don't like their music. i liked em back in high school, but i tried listening to them again and i just found them lame and boring.

anyway, so far, i'm considering a 13x6 black panther natural maple, and a tama metalworks 13x6.5. i'm leaning towards the metal snare right now though, because i already have a 14x5.5 maple snare and i dunno if the 13x6 would be a drastic step up or change from the 14". any opinions?

thanks to everyone who suggested something. :)

if you're getting a 13" steel snare, go with the metalworks. it's basically a JJ snare that doesn't look gimmicky.

the feel and sound of a 13" is entirely different from a 14", so yes it would pose quite a change from your 14"x5.5". a 13" sounds more compact, direct, and focused, and there's a lot less give to it than a 14".

i play a 13"x5.5" bp brass, and a 13"x3" pearl brass. same diameter, same material, but the two are totally different snares. i think the 13"x6" bp, while having the same material and close to the same depth, will be a lot different from your 14"x5.5".

if you have any doubts, ask sir JP which forerunner branch has a 13"x6" maple in stock, bring your 14"x5.5" along and test the two snares out side by side.

@plep
ok thanks for that clarification. ngayon 50-50 na ko dun sa dalawang snares (bp, metalworks). i'll probably choose which one i want once i have the cash already.

@tranquildomain
yep the jj snare's good that's why i'm considering the tama metalworks, magkapareho lang sila e, and some are even saying its better than the jj (i doubt it though, placebo effect lang siguro yun at ayaw nila sa jj.).

ayos ok na ko sa mga choices ko. thanks to everyone who helped/posted. cheers. badtrip matinding ipunan nanaman to ng baon, wala na kong pera para sa bagong tattoo, lahat napunta na sa drums... :D

i dont know anything about snares actually... so back then i bought a DW brass snare because:

1.) DW made in USA is a good brand
2.) it is expensive - match that with being a good brand, it should be good, right?
3.) they say brass is made for metal.

until now i am not sure whether i bought a good snare... it seems impossible to make it sound bad though ... even if i ddnt really tune it right.

here's a bad clip of it along with my bad playing:

feature=email

ive been playing for a month, so dont be mean :)
