Variax + Workbench = Heaven!
« on: June 19, 2009, 09:17:07 AM »
Now I get open/alt tunings w/ a flick of a switch.  I even make the guitar or pickup selection change with it.  Dream come true.  Haaaaay!

Here's what's in my Custom settings. The numbers refer to the 5 way switch positions

Custom 1 settings (for electric)
1 Open E - Les Paul flametop, bridge pu
2 Open A - bridge -  Special w/ P90
3 Open E - Les Paul flametop, bridge pu
4 Open G - neck - Junior w/ P90
5 Open E - Les Paul flametop, neck pu

Custom 2 settings (for acoustic)
1 Open G - Style O
2 Open A - Style O
3 Open G - Banjo
4 Open D - Tricone
5 Open E - Tricone
* I'm still playing around with these settings. I think I'll throw in some options for Dano/lipstick or DeArmond. I don't need open A or cuz I can use a capo anytime anyway.

Thanks to blues bro Bitoy for the Workbench.

Medyo matagal ko na di ginamit workbench ko. I don't even recall all my custom settings  :-D. Si Adrian Belew nag Parker na, pero yung signature model niya, may Variax yung loob. Bale Parker + Variax = Adrian Belew Model .

All my acoustic guitar sounds are from my Variax.

What can you say about the Tricone setting? Is it believable when recorded? How bout live? How does it compare with a REAL resonator?

It will probably work better for recording since there will be no 'coloring'.  Believable? Yes. Exact? No.  A 1930s Tricone, and even my own Johnson Tricone, sounds smoother and warmer than this. It seems to be a cross between a Style O and a Tricone -- "metal clunk" of the former, glassiness and balance of the latter.

Since I was in front of the computer, I recorded this.

Thanks, bro. That was open D.

Bili ka na rin Variax -- para madali mag praktis ng lahat ng open tunings. :-)

very interested in getting one of these, but i heard the piezo bridges are a little fragile, the saddle wires apparently get cut when you're not careful in restringing?  if i were to invest in one, where could i have the electronics repaired, if ever?

I didn't know that pero nag restring na ko, ok naman.

If ever, try Mang Raul, he's in the FAQ.

Great. Just what I wanted to hear actually. I want it to sound authentic when printed but still have its own personality. I'm not too hung up on modelling technology like a lot of people who dismiss it just because it doesn't sound exactly like the real counterparts. Heck, 2 Tricones of the same make and model probably wouldn't sound the same. I guess the people who benefits most from the technology are the open minded ones. Kudos to you. Now how about some down & dirty delta blues with the sitar setting with all strings tuned to Eb?!  :-o :-D

The recording I made doesn't do it justice, too compressed/processed.  At a gig, this thing literally turns heads when I switch models.

Overheard at a gig:  "Uy, banjo yun ah!"   :-D

Mismo eto. Sa akin nga nag change lang ako from electric to acoustic guitar nagtaka na mga tao  :-D.

Regarding sa tibay ng variax, I got the very first shipment of variax 700 from yupangco wayback 2004 pa. Til now wala namang lumalabas na defect. I think sa mga lower models (500, 300 and 600) may mga konting issues, pero sa 700 wala naman.

Uy, gumawa ako PG model na out of phase parallel PAFs! Nilagay ko sa position 4 ng Les Paul setting.  So dun sa isang knob position, the 5 way switch gives me: LP PAF neck, LP PAF bridge + neck, LP PAF bridge, PG tone, LP goltop bridge tone.

question: what's better sounding, using the footswitch when connecting the variax to an x3 live, or using a digital cable?
