Mike Mods hit MTPA !
« on: December 08, 2009, 08:39:41 PM »
Alright. After a long stint in modding pedals...

I just got my first real bargain-basement LDC mike. An MXL 990. Of course what do I do with a mike that's cheap and has moderately good reviews ? Mod it hehehe.

Off to google I go. Good lord, there's a ton of info on modding MXLs, Nady's and MCA SP-1's. Let's not even get to the Oktava mikes.

So I took one recipe and performed it. It involved removing what seems to be a treble blocking cap and a 1 Gohm resistor in series with the capsule. Also removed the inner basket. Then, just like my Behringer C1, I slipped in a crystalcore scalarizer on it.

I don't have my camera with me and I'm just about to do the soundcheck. Stay tuned.

PS Boskit, your MXL V63 does exhibit that "eshhh" sibilance. I read here that removing the inner basket of the guard will fix that. May I also ? Hehehe. De kahit di na k lang but if you want me to...

Bad news. The mods I did made the mike distort so I had to bring it back to the original circuitry. Apparently, the mods change the bias of the first JFET preamp and that has to be tuned. OK sana, it will result in higher headroom, but it requires an oscilloscope to calibrate. Something I don't have yet (my kuya's scope is in the repair shop).

Wala. Bigo tayo for now. Madugo pala.

But the good news is...removing the inner basket and pop screen of the MXL 990 resulted in a more transparent and more open sounding mike. I like. If only for that, sulit.

Saka parang favorite kong commercial...I got stinky, I got dirty, but ssseeee....I learned ! (yay pedophile fodder!)
