Ramones was bubblegum pop punk as most people would put it. The Buzzcocks had elements of Pop Punk also. Chad Gilbert of NFG used the be the frontman of Shai Hulud. Black Flag's (Practically one of the pioneers of hardcore) Bill Stevenson formed Descendents and All which also has Pop Punk elements. When punk started THERE WAS ALREADY POP PUNK and the Ramones are the living proof of it.
Punk has always been about doing what you want. Anti-mainstream, the way I see it is not conforming to trends. Meaning you do whatever the hell you want. I can listen to pop music because it's what I want to do. Not because it's trendy and that I should follow it.
I saw someone post something about emo. Emo is a legitimate genre (at least early emo). Members of Foo Fighters came from Sunny Day Real Estate which is a seminal emo band (Take note that Sunny Day Real Estate also emerged from different hardcore bands). Minor Threat (Obviously one of the hardcore pioneers) vocalist Ian Mackaye formed Fugazi which is also emo (he won't admit it though). Emo now has practically no traces of its early roots. Emo was supposedly an honest and heartfelt genre. Emo is not what it is now, a pretentious race to see who's more pathetic than the other. Old emo was honest, and heartfelt.
Oddly enough though, the emo tag shouldn't exist. All forms of music is emotional.
I saw someone introduce TRANSIT to this thread. I love that band. They mixed Pop Punk with early emo and early hardcore influences. Check them out
www.myspace.com/transitma . Try Title Fight too.
www.myspace.com/titlefight . I'm actually hoping for these bands to bring back the good kind of pop punk.
Being the in Punk / Hardcore scene. I don't see any reason why I can't listen to Minor Threat and Blink 182 at the same time. Let's keep an open mind guys. After all, Punk is about keeping an open mind right? Punk / Hardcore is also about community. Peace sana tayong lahat.
Paadvertise lang rin pala ng mga banda ko. haha
