galing talaga si portnoy for what he does. pero iba ang marunong mag jazz sa magaling mag jazz. wala namang all around kahit sinong drummer naman di kaya maging magaling sa lahat, marunong pwede.

@ushuaia..........ehem.......si vinnie kulangutan este vinnie coliuata (whew nag-google pa ako para sa tamang spelling ng apelyido ng mamang to) ang tunay na ONE OF THE BEST ALL AROUND DRUMMER OF ALL TIME..........kemo full blown bebop or big band jazz, latin, fusion, funk, pop, rock, reggae and heavy metal with lots of double bass...the man has done it all!!! all well documented on cd's and videos...sabi nga ng mentor ko na dapat pag drummer ka drummer ka...as in you shld know all the styles and so on...yun eh syempre kung gusto mo tlga maging trabaho ang
pagtatambol.

kahit si Simon Phillips pwede rin ALL AROUND DRUMMER pero gaya ni Portnoy more on progressive rock tlga sila. iwas muna sa mga drumming style na andun tlga yung swinging feel much needed in jazz style eh either you have that or don't.

Si Derek Roddy blast beat master yan pero hanep may potential sya sa bebop jazz
drumming as proven nung sinabayan nya mga jazz play along ko years ago at Donati's forum.

BTT...
Anyway glad Portnoy is keeping it all up. Love his drumming, his band, his attitude and so on. Medyo baduy na nga lang minsan kapag ginagaya nya palagi  yung signature cowbell passage ni Peart sa mga drum solos nya. Feeling drum fan tlga sya sa mga drum solos nya whch is ok at first pero he shld start removing those ripped off drum solo parts or never play a drum solo since DT songs and drum parts are way way way awesome already pero syempre kailangan pa rin mag drum solo para sa mga bagitong fans nya hehe.

Mike Portnoy has achieved recognitions and awards no other drummer could...

Portnoy has won 23 awards from Modern Drummer magazine, including
"Best Up & Coming Talent" (once)
"Best Clinician" (two times)
"Best Educational Video/DVD" (two times),
"Best recorded performance" (6 times)
"Best Progressive Rock Drummer" (for 12 consecutive years)
Second youngest person (at 37 years of age) to be inducted into the Rock Drummer Hall of Fame since Neil Peart was inducted in 1983 (at 31 years of age).

And has most recently won The Spirit of Prog award from the 2009 Classic Rock awards with his band Dream Theater, where they were also nominated for Album of the Year for their release, Black Clouds and Silver Linings.

He has also been the catalyst for founding several other progressive rock groups and projects: Transatlantic, Liquid Tension Experiment, and O.S.I. (with former Dream Theater keyboardist Kevin Moore), touring as well with Mexican drummer "Chucho" Dávila giving free clinic sessions to local Music Stores in Texas in 2005.

He has released three instructional videos, "Progressive Drum Concepts", "Liquid Drum Theater", which has won awards from Modern Drummer Magazine, and his latest "In Constant Motion".

In the October 2009 issue of Rhythm Magazine, Portnoy was listed as #5 in their list of the Top 50 Drummers of All Time. (Not to mention the youngest in the this list...!!!

He was also featured on VH1's Metal Mania. He drummed for the show's cover of Motorhead's Overkill.

On February 17, 2010, Avenged Sevenfold announced that Portnoy will be filling in for their former drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, who passed away in December. Portnoy was known to be Sullivan's all time favorite drummer, and has been quoted saying, "It would be an honor and, without question, that’s what Jim would have wanted." Portnoy will join Avenged Sevenfold in the studio over the next few months in order to record their upcoming album, which will be in Sullivan's memory.

Also, aside from here talent is, being so humble and having a showmanship... That's why all of us, no doubt he is the best drummer...

brad di mo ata na gets sinabi ko,iba nga ang marunong sa ma galing. kahit naman sino dito siguro kaya mag ding ding da ding pero are you really playing jazz? yes vinnie or simon can play jazz but man listen to guys like tony with miles elvin jones, dejohnnette etc. then tell me vinnie can play jazz authentically. yes vinnie or weckl, gadd lots of great drumers can play diff. styles but authentic? i dont think so. na alala ko mga coment ng metal drummers dati sa megadeth album with vinnie,im not a metal drummer so i cant comment kung ok ba o hindi. i heard vinnie and weckl played latin, its fusion latin but ask bo razon or royal hartigan if thats latin drumming.

Iba talaga si mike P. Pagnagkwekwentohan kami ng mga drummer-tropas ko, we always tell a lot of drummers like Vinnie C., JJordy, Collias, Steve Smith, Aaron Spears, Simmon Phillips, Joe Campitelli, Virgil D, Steve Gadd, Akira Jumbo and all the drummers who are famous under the sun...

But when we talk about Mike P. tumatahimik na kami... Talagang we always agree to one thing that we like him so much better than the other  famous drummers... We dont know why but there is something with Mike's drumming that is so charismatic and at the same time very interesting...
I guess, it's about his mastery and showmanship. Not to mention, hindi sya nakakaboring panuorin sa mga live concerts nila na collection ko... Every song there's a fill na gusto mo gayahin. Simple man or very complex...

bro, nice argument but i beg to differ about authenticity.  What's authentic anyway? Is it because a name drummer describes this or that person's playing as not authentic or is there an official group of people/musicians that creates standards of what is authentic or not? Because for me, drumming is evolving regardless of what style it is. I don't think Tony, elvin or de johnette, were thinking about their playing as being "authentic" back then. What about great drummers like Baby Dodds or Pa Pa joe jones who came before guys like tony and elvin? Probably there were also people who critizised Tony (-some for playing too loud, having bigger drums rather than the traditional drum sizes) or  Elvin (-who back then had a very unique, free-form approach to comping and soloing) for not being authentic for their jazz playing. Anyways, all I'm saying is each of these great drummers I mentioned were innovators in their own right. They have their own unique approach to jazz. Drummers who broke traditions just like contemporary drummers like vinnie, weckl, gadd etc. That's why saying guys like vinnie can't play jazz authentically is kind of a joke to me because Jazz (Improvisation) still lives on from these greats. Anyway just my 2 cents.

By the way, M.P. is a great drummer. Cheers.

tony playing loud or big drums doesnt mean he cant play jazz. your drums has nothing to do with it. elvin, jack, roy haynes doesn't even play a 4 piece drum kit after the 60s. bro if that's your argument, then why didn't herbie called vinnie for his jazz gigs? why is brian blade on it? poeple no matter how great they are can't do everything, or maybe we can be jack of all trades master of none. dennis chambers said that he can play straight ahead and he wonders why scofield replaced him with bill steawart. maybe bec like i always said you can learn how to play any kind of music, but to be a master of it is difficult. yes jazz lives on these greats(tain, blade, ballard, bill stewart etc) and prog rock lives on portnoy!

MP does not really play jazz and he admitted that in his Liquid Drum Theater DVD while commenting on the making of his solo with Tony Levin.

One of the perks of playing prog is that you are not confined to one style of music but on the other hand, it would be a challenge to come up with your own sound.

For me he is the best because his style is identifiable.  When you listen to him, regardless of who he plays with or what he plays on,  you'll know it's him.

No disrespect but I think jazz drummers are too technical. Being too technical takes out the fun in drumming.  I have books and videos from well known jazz drummers (Weckl,Colaiuta just to name a few) and I was like a ten year old being taught calculus.

IMHO, MP is like a Popstar(sorry for the term) of drumming.  He has the skills, the attitude, performance level, but more importantly, he's is one of those drummers that will actually make you pick up your sticks, setup your drums and say "Uy, ok yun a!Masubukan nga..."
