Spiral Starecase's More Today Than Yesterday/Our Day will Come/Broken Hearted Man/This Guy's In Love - I think this album was way beyond its time (60s).

Eric Johnson's Venus Isle (album) - What could any listener with golden ears ask for? - warmth, crispness, the "ooomph!", brilliance, amazing mixing and mastering... i could go on. Thanks to Richard Mullen's straight ahead analog approach! The only thing it didn't have though was commercial success. :(

I think yung mga productions ng team ni MAX MARTIN from stockholm, sweden..  mixing and mastering at its best.. even though i am not a big fan of BSB , britney spears, nsync , 98 deg.. but i think their consoles and techniques are really great! 8) ..also add bruce swedien's accusonic recording process...  :D

Agree!

Sana yung mga more talented musos ang mas nabibigyan ng ganitong opportunity at na-c-commercialize. :)

For metal... hmmm...

just so we can have a common ground... among all the Metallica albums, which one is your fav in terms of mix (not the songs)?  My fav one is Load and Reload.  I like their sound the best here (not my fav albums... but I like the over-all tonality here) ... better than St. Anger... although, I do like the St. Anger rehearsal recording way better than the finished one.

My fav rock album mixes are Van Halen - Carnal Knowledge and Aerosmith's Get a Grip.

I also like Disturbed's 10,000 fists album

**additional comment** Although I'm not fond of country music... they do have killer acoustic mixes.  Man, it really shows off the tone and clarity of the guitars!

Load and Reload din! Ganda nung pagkaka-capture sa mga instrumento at vocals. Lalo na yung gitara. BIGAT!

I also vote for Aerosmith's Get a Grip. First track palang, may "ooomph" impression agad sakin. :D

Ya... Metallica's earlier albums had great songs... then when the black album came out... big difference... polished... good mix.. but it didn't sound 'raw' anymore.

St. Anger naman... it sounds... small.  The new "snare" sound of lars here sounds weird... kinda phased na di mo maintindihan.

I chose Metallica as a common ground cuz they have a lot of albums that are all mixed and recorded differently... some may like the wet sound of Lightning... the dry sound of Puppets... etc...etc.

Van Halen has had a pretty consistent sound naman ever since... it got better and better throughout the years... but over-all mix and recording has stayed the same... so I couldn't really use it as a peg.

KULA SHAKER - Mystical Machine Gun, Govinda
OUR LADY PEACE - One Man Army
JAMIROQUAI - anything from "A Funk Odyssey"
DREAM THEATER - Metropolis Pt 2 Scenes From a Memory
Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight Tonight

lots of nice benchmarks but I think ZAPPA OWNS US ALL.

Counting Crows - august and everything after
Natalie Merchant - tiger lily

among local recordings naman, cynthia alexander - ripping yarns (although they say all her albums sound good --- she's indie by the way).

these two albums have a common warmth to it.

nahihiya man ako mag comment dahil puro veterans na kayo sa field na ito.

pero angal ako sa and justice for all ng metallica. sagwa ng bass ewan. pero ung iba ok. (bkt nga ba? palit palit ba sila ng engineer producer?)

IMHO narinig ko ung System of a Down ganda ng dating sa akin rinig na rinig mo lahat ng dapat marinig. un album na my timeclock sa ulo. ang mga songs dun ung B.Y.O.B., radio video, cigaro, revenga.

must have din ito.

Joe Sat's Super Colossal is a must have as well.

Yung mga mid-to-latter recordings ng Toto rin. :D

Hey... only a few forumites here are vets!    The rest of us are all newbies at this.  My part in the past has always been on the agency side, but I've always sat in just to watch the guys/techs at Ad Farm and Hit Productions.  Like most people here in the PH, I started on a Sound Blaster (Audigy 2) ... and Sonar/Cakewalk.  Mostly my own little ditties... no drums since I don't play drums .. I just used to over-dub and over-dub...so I learned about "latency" early on.  I dealt with it an old-fashioned way... something I learned in video... the clapper sync... hahahaha... I'd have a click to mark the start of the recording/playback  then I'd just sync the tracks manually by lining up the 'clak' peaks.  I'd play each part, then sync all the recorded tracks... then mix.  Hehehe... low-tech/old-tech but it worked!  Better than relying on low latency... of course, if you can get rid of the latency... better... if not... you gotta put in more effort to make up for the shortcomings of your DAW and not make it an excuse.

Some favorites:

-Helmet - Aftertaste
-Chevelle - This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In)
-Tool - Lateralus (2001) and Aenima (1998?)
-Days of the New - Days of the New (great acoustic playing with different wood-y textures....)
-Candiria  - What Doesn't Kill You (thick prog rock sound...)
-Duncan Sheik - Duncan Sheik (captures great acoustic tone...)
-Floetry - Floetic (English urban soul production combines Nu school sounds with old school analog warmth)
-Ivana Santilli - Brown (love the Nu Jazz sound...)
-Massive Attack - Mezzanine (a personal uber favorite)

Some old favorites:
-Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsies
-Sergio Mendes - Sergio Mendes
-Christopher Cross - Sailing
-Anything Supremes put out on MoTown..the sound ultimately brings me back to the"feel" of being around in the 60s/70s....

Well, to put it into proper perspective, the common tao isn't so anal as we are when it comes to getting that right sound. Sometimes when I'm arranging some of my own songs (which will probably never get released), there's always that tweak to that patch, that little nudge to that kick or snare to make the just a little bit more exciting, yada yada... that I doubt the ordinary guy on the street will ever take notice. Btw, I wouldn't consider myself a veteran... just been in a few battles.

There are DVD (which should sound better) remixes but reviews are conflicting.

Chesky recordings, anybody? There are some that I like. Clarity is one of their virtues.

Fagen's The Nightfly I adore, but it could be the arrangements. I particularly like the soundscape/imaging

Al Schmitt figured in some critically-acclaimed recordings, so maybe his name is synonynous with good engineering.

I learned that what sounds good in my stereo doesn't sound as good in others and vice-versa. Heavy mixes don't sound good in my system.
