Volume problem
« on: September 25, 2010, 12:40:21 AM »
May problem ako sa guitar, tinatamad nako ifigure out. :-D  I have an LP. di totally ng ooff yung volume when i turn it down. nagooff lamang TOTALLY when you turn down the other pickup's volume. Maririnig mo pa yung strum mo on low volume siguro at 2 or 3. I also feel that the pickups were not giving their "best" even i got dimarzios airnorton and tonezone. Furthermore, when I'm not touching the strings, parang nagtutunog grounded, pero subtle lang but i think di normal. Naka H-H config lang ako.

Do you think the problem is shielding issue, or dahil sa wiring? malinis naman yung solder at wires. I checked it several times. Parang di completely napupunta sa ground yung signal kapag tinuturn down yung volume pot.

Your help is highly appreciated  :-D Thanks

Baka hindi tama wiring. Which wiring did you use? or did somebody else do it?

with the hum/ground pag hindi hawak ang strings, normal lang yan sa Pinas (lalo na pag distorted ang signal mo). Hindi kasi malinis ang kuryente natin. Naipapasa hanggang sa gitara.

EDIT:
I suddenly remembered when my guitar had just one pickup (bridge), tinanggal ko kasi yung neck. My guitar has a 1V, 1T configuration. Wiring is all good din. Pero here's the catch, pag nasa bridge pickup ako, ok naman. Pero when i go to the neck position na dapat walang tunog kasi walang pickup, surprisingly may napipickup parin na tunog yung bridge at may konting-konting tunog na lumalabas sa amp.

Must be because of the pot's tolerance (kung ilang percent yung parang margin of error niya, in layman's term). So pag naka zero ka na, minsan hindi pa rin siguro totally zero ang reading (i dunno) kaya may nakukuha parin na tunog.

You know what?  We have the same problem, same guitar type and even the same brand of pickups.  I'm pretty good with electronics and stuff but tinamad na rin akong isipin kung bakit ganon yung volume controls.

Yun namang pag hindi mo hawak yung strings, normal mag-hum yan.  Parang antenna yung strings, ang daming nasasagap.  Pag hinawakan mo, parang isa kang malaking shield kaya nawawala yung hum.

You mean on the bridge position, you can't turn off the sound fully?  Or neck position?  Or baka nasa middle ka?

About the hum, sometimes pickups have that, kahit humbucker pa siya.  Like if the individual coils are not fully balanced, they don't cancel out every noise.  Is it acceptable to you?  The tradeoff is that some nice frequencies may live in this region where the noise also lives, so look out for that if the guitar has exceptional sustain characteristics.  Some guys will actually modify their pickups (take off some windings in one coil of a humbucker) so that they have the unbalanced coils.  Sometimes they un-pot their pickups, take off the covers, etc.  All of which may have noisier consequences, but all for finding that extra little swirl or airyness, if they feel the guitar gets choked in anyway.

In my case, kapag nasa neck position yung switch with the neck volume control fully turned down, may tunog pa rin kung hindi naka turn down fully yung volume control ng bridge.  And vice versa.

exactly greasykid. I am using Linear 500k pot sa volume at Audio taper 500k pot sa Tone control. Yung wiring nya dati pa. Parang ibig sabihin di lahat ng signal napupunta sa ground, na dapat naman talaga dun pupunta kapag volume down. lilipat lang naman yung signal from lug 1 which is the HOT one, then going to the third lug going to the ground.. tsk panu kaya 'to. or normal lang sa LP configurations yun?
