Best bang-for-the-buck reference headphones.
« on: December 01, 2010, 07:41:27 AM »
What's a nice, decent, and hopefully cheap set of reference headphones? My budget is around P3-4k. I know it's kinda pushing it pero that's all I can bring out right now. I just need headphones that have a close to flat response so that I can bring projects at home to mix. I can always cross-check in the studio since may monitors naman dun(KRK V6). I really just need headphones so I can work on stuff at home. Currently I'm looking at Sennheiser's HD 428 PRO and Samson's SR850. What would you guys suggest?

Parang last year lang ako ang may thread na ganito hehehehe.

I landed on the AKG K77, but the higher models wouldn't hurt. Parang 70 dollars ata yun IIRC so the price is right up your alley.

San na ka work ngayon Jet ?

Kamusta naman frequency response nyan sir Jobet? And where can I get them locally?

Still studying sir. Di lang siguro tayo nagkikita sa CSB. May minors ako now sa main eh. Haha. Last term ko na sa 3rd term. I'll try to get into pre-prod, pero film composing/game music talaga ang hanap ng puso ko. Haha.

They're okay. As a rule though don't trust headphones tho, but as they told me, you can get 80% of the way then fine tune using monitors.

Even the cheapo sony MDR V-150's are good and very cheap but the bass response might be a little lacking.

Highly rated din yung Sony V-7506.

Anyway, baka bugbog na na question yan dito, so here's the old thread :

Marvinq bought a Samson SR850 some months ago and it looked almost exactly like my AKG K240 Studio! And at a third of the cost of the AKG! I'd say the Samson is a good buy.

Personally, the AKG 240's are the only headphones I will do a rough mix on. They say the Audio Technika ATH-M40fs (and M50) are also good cans to mix on, but let's always reference a mix on a good pair of monitors. For one thing, stereo imaging is a bit exaggerated when using cans.
Sonar 4.04PE/5.2PE/7.02PE/8.31 PE, Project 5 v2.5.1, EmulatorX 1.5, Cubase SL2, Ableton Live 7.14,  Intel Q6600 MSI P43 Neo 4Gb Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2-800, Emu 1820m, Yamaha DSP Factory, Terratec DMX 6fire

@KitC

I went to Audiophile in Festival Mall Alabang today. Ala silang SR850, so I checked out the AKG K77. Looks decent, still looking for reviews in the internet though. Parang gusto ko rin patulan yung SHURE SRH440. A bit pricier pero it looks like it can take more abuse than the K77.

EDIT:

Parang madaling masira yung Mga ATH-M40fs. Yun kasi mga gamit namin sa skul eh. Pero siguro dahil marami masyadong gumagamit.

Medyu at first panget sa comfort pero masasanay ka din.
Sound is great.

Relatively flat. Used it to mix a project(I didn't have monitors at the time).

Although it's not really practical if you plan on using it outside; i.e. commuting, listening to music in school/at work since after some time the cups tend to dig into your head a bit.

Roughly P1.6k yung Samson. I plan to buy one para marami akong pwedeng ipag-cross reference kapag mixing.

For the SRH440, around P4k sya.
