Get a decent multifx with lots of drive sounds
Gig with it for a year. From there, you will notice what tones you use more often
Then when you find that specific sound, shoot for the best gear along that road you can afford.

Have a clear sonic picture of where you want to take your sound as a guitar player.

Focus and concentrate on gear that will help you get into the general ballpark of players you admire tone-wise.

Be aware that some stuff that sound great when you're playing alone might not translate to live band situations.

Always consider the genre you'll be working in.

Take Bob Dylan's advice:  "Nothing is better, nothing is best."  Whichever is available is the best tool for the job.
