Speaker size in studio monitors
« on: December 24, 2011, 01:21:50 AM »
Hi, still lookin around for some studio monitors, i've around two weeks left till I go back to manila so that's two weeks more of research lol

anyway, been looking around a bit and i've always wondered,

do studio monitors with bigger speakers peform better than the monitors with smaller speakers?

I know for a fact that the bigger speakers generate more low end than tiny speakers(but you can compensate by adding subs->from what i've read)

So is it better to have 8 inched speakers over 4/5/6 inched speakers?

I was thinking of getting the krk rp5 g2's but since I have no experience with studio monitors, I'm quit unsure if I'd be hearing the lower end of the spectrum with only 5 inch speakers  :? I've read that people added subs....but...are there any monitors where I wouldn't need subs? :D thanks!  :)

edit: well after a bit of reading, may tinatawag palang 3 way monitors, interesting but it looks kinda overkill since I'll only be using it in my bedroom  :D

The bigger the woofer, the lower the bass capability. If you can afford the 8" montiros, go for it, but shipping here will be a beeyotch. Airlines, in particular, are pretty strict about shipping speakers in antimagnetic shipping containers. Why not look around for local distros here so you have easier access to warranties and other services?

I concur with what KitC said - the bigger the woofer, the better the low end.  However, for near field monitoring, you do not need big woofers or a sub for that matter.  What is important is that the tonal quality is balanced.  As long you control the lows well, even with small speakers, they will resolve well when brought up to a bigger speaker with lower frequency response.  Monitoring is a matter of taste and what you get accustomed to.  FWIW
