Hi, my take on this is that save your money and get the best preamp you can afford.  I used to have the VTB-1 but it also fall
short to my expectation, all low cost tube preamp and the others are all working on a starve mode though it may give you
warm but still seems a little short on headroom and s/n ratio.  if you have a low cost interface for your recording then definitely
you dont want to go cheap with your preamp, it gives warm and also a nice coloration to the sound. I currently use focusrite
voicemaster pro, very good sounding, I save enough money to get one, but if you still want to go for low cost, go for behringer
tube preamp, its warm sounding preamp.

Sir there are tons to choose from. if you will record metal song, you need headroom, you might want something with compressor built in or limiter since youre going to sing loud.  I good gates will help to remove unwanted noise if you're recording on a uncontrolled environment. Tube or no tube it doesnt really matter, look at those expensive neve preamp, no tube.  I think I a focusrite saffire in J.B. its a very good preamp. I tell you my friend besides microphone its the only item in your recording studio that you dont want to go cheap, I mean not on a monetary term, there are good sounding preamp thats not too costly but you wont get a good preamp without any expense this is due to the components and research the manufacturer put in it.

Go for the Golden Age Pre73 its circuitry is based on the Neve 1073 preamp. Also it has a maximum gain of 80db.

The Golden Age pre is good but I've read here that quality of the unit can be inconsistent since it's manufactured in china. Anyway, have a read here: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/low-end-theory/340153-golden-age-project-pre73.html

Lots of info on modding the Pre-73

Behringer MIC100 or MIC200 (latter is preferred) or ART MP V3. Around 100 dollars. Yung ART MP only goes for 48 dollars while the ART MP V3 is 75 dollars at Musiciansfriend. Just to give you an idea :-D

Shop around din sa classifieds baka me matumbok ka :-D
