hi guys, i was thinking of buying a drum machine hardware, but someone told me i should get a software first, so i could get a good feel out of it.

can you guys recommend me anything? i was thinking of having the big fat kick drum of a roland tr 808 - the tube screamer of drum machines lol (just kidding)

i dont mind buying, but i would like to start out cheap first ... or you could just go ahead and recommend me a hardware

so far, my research had me looking at a: Akai XR20, a Boss Dr 880, a roland groovebox and a roland sp555. i really prefer hardwares since i like physically tweaking knobs

why start out cheap when you can start out for free?

eto favorite ko: http://marvinpavilion.ojaru.jp/en/sound/vst.html
if you find the sound 'thin' (like most people do) palusutin mo sa tube-saturation kind of plugin (like most people do). saturation: invada (luma pero ok), xcita (luma din), o kaya ito: http://rekkerd.org/bootsy-plug-ins/

regarding Akai XR20, a Boss Dr 880 ---- alam ko may na-download na akong mga samples niyan eh (pwede mong i-load sa shortcircuit or some other sample player) --- so google google na lang. actually, baka mas marami ka pang mahanap.

ay teka, pang-LIVE ba 'to? sabagay pwede pa rin 'to.

ah okay sige bootcamp tayo.

the *.dll file you downloaded is a VST instrument plugin which will require a host/DAW like reaper.

http://www.reaper.fm/

(peeps, uhh kung may alam kayong absolutely free na midi+wav DAW software suggest niyo na)

reaper is not free pero i think i've heard people say that it will function past the trial period (di ko sure). if the trial period portion turns you off, siguro pwede ka maghanap ng 'other versions' sa 'sipa-pwet' or some other site that hosts files provided by people with eye patches, peg legs and a parrot on their shoulder *wink*.

eto yung general idea (di ko alam specifics sa reaper eh, sorry):
- after installing reaper, you need to load said *.dll (tromine-gt). sorry di ko kabisado reaper baka someone else knows. *help naman*
- you create a midi track then configure it so that it sends midi information to the VST instrument you loaded.
- in the midi editor, create the beat you want.

hehe teka isipin ko pa, wait...

how to load VST instruments in reaper

programming drums (midi editor)
http://www.reaper.fm/aboutmidi.php
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=84243

nga pala, you don't need a midi keyboard to create drum beats in a DAW like reaper, just in case na may magsabi sayo otherwise.

whoa! seems overwhelming, especially since kailangan ko pa pala bumili ng host. although, i do know how to program drums on Hydrogen. if its the same format i wouldnt have as much problems.

as much as i'd like to go the software route, i am thinking i am more interested in paying for a hardware.

there's a certain aesthetic in physically touching knobs and composing drum lines there ... i might get something with sampling capabilities - assuming its not very expensive.

oh well, i have a feeling i would end up getting an Akai XR20 a few months from now, hehe

You can try the grandaddy of all drummachine software, Rebirth RB338: http://www.rebirthmuseum.com/

I remember being able to sync it to my DAW and using rewire to fly in the samples direct.

Sonar 4.04PE/5.2PE/7.02PE/8.31 PE, Project 5 v2.5.1, EmulatorX 1.5, Cubase SL2, Ableton Live 7.14,  Intel Q6600 MSI P43 Neo 4Gb Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2-800, Emu 1820m, Yamaha DSP Factory, Terratec DMX 6fire

Well, when you fire up rebirth, it initiates the rewire protocol which is like a virtual audio cable that connects to a rewire-capable DAW. You then start your DAW and it should 'see' the rewire channels as additional audio channels; there are separate channels for each 'instrument'. Sync is also handled by the rewire protocol so that if you press play in your DAW, Rebirth should also play simultaneously. IIRC, you can render Rebirth as audio in your DAW too.

You can use Rebirth standalone and program your beats and patterns then render them to wav. You can then import this wav into your DAW for further dubbing if desired. Rebirth was fun since it had really good 808, 909, and 303 sounds - all classic Roland.
