hmmm. labo nga. kasi sa amin, kung sinabing groove, un ung parang "sentence" ng drum part. so yung groove pwedeng on time, behind or ahead of time. and nangyayari lang, merong mga grooves that feel good at pasok sa kanta at meron ding hindi.

ung poste naman, parang term namin para maggive way sa isang soloist. so assuming na nasa percussion line ka, tapos conga solo time, keeping post means to play in a manner that would support the conga player but never overthrow him. parang ganun. pero siyempre hindi lang sa soloist, bastat playing the drums to support the song. so in a sense, parang pwede mong sabihin na maganda groove niya at nag-poposte rin at the same time. so un sa amin. :)

Sir, mukhang yan ang pinaka magandang sagot for me. Kasi it is logical nga naman. You were able to point out clearly kung kailan inaapply...

May iba ka pa ba sir supporting reading or articles about that. para mabasa ko at mas lalo ko maintindihan. Nung una akala ko pareho lang.hindi pala.

Salamat sir.

What does GROOVE mean to you?
« Reply #29 on: August 24, 2008, 08:51:20 PM »
NDUGU CHANCLER: Groove to me is musicians playing a rhythm, a pattern, and a song where it feels good enough to affect people in a way that causes some type of reaction. Some type of reaction could be some toe tapping, to fingers moving, to head swaying, to body dancing, and to just feeling good; but feeling whatever that particular groove can portray. When I say "that groove", because some songs are not meant to be happy and make you dance. Some songs are meant to make you feel solemn. A groove is capturing the essence of, whatever, that song is meant to..

groove comes from the body... it's the umami feeling inside the soul that shakes your body to the dance of the drum beat.

diba ang POSTE - sumasabay ka lang sa tempo at time signature tapos ang GROOVE - nagdidisplace ka ng beat or syncopating beat kumbaga nilalagyan ng arte pero sabay padin sa tempo at time signature.
music is what keeps me going. without it, i got no self esteem.

as a drummer, how will you learn/acquire/teach that "groove feel".
« Reply #34 on: November 26, 2008, 03:51:16 PM »
guys hndi ko alam kung may thread na ganito, anyways, as a drummer...
ask ko lang kung paano kayo natuto (and kung paano tinuturo) ang pumalo ng tunog "mayaman" or ung "groove" na tinatawag.
marami kaseng drummer impressive pumalo when it comes to fast drumming, lakas ng palo, rudiments, and sight reading, pero wala ung "groove" feel, or ung "X" factor,

eto ung mga steps or factors na nangyari sken before i acquired that "feel".
1) nakinig at nagbabad sa mga cd's ni Ron Kenoly
2) i learned and played the bass for 13 years in our church kaya alam ko ang dilema ng bass player kapag bumibilis ang palo ng drummer.

pa-share naman nung sa inyo.

Hmm..I am trying to figure what "tunog mayaman" is and I just can't quite figure.

For me I think groove is built with time and experience, I myself still lack this. It is one of the hardest things to acquire as a drummer and is also seldom seen in us.

I'll let the more experience drummers here explain further.

sakin ang groove kasi, is like putting spices on a simple musical phrase...parang nilalagyan mo ng dynamics yung simple measure...in time parin, pero with more flavor...dun pinapasok yung displacements, ghost notes, accentuations, etc... :-D

or another explanation para sa akin...yung summing up and combining notes to establish a good musical sound. 8-)

kaya ba poste kasi supporta siya, maybe to an interresting part of the song? parang siya yung magbuild up to a new certain beat?

and a groove, yung tipong papakinggan mo talaga dahil very catchy un beat nya and its not repetitive...it could support its own music without the help of other instruments.

just an opinion. :-D

its not repetitive..
I agree with your opinion except for this part where in you referred to groove as non repetitive. Groove like what others have said is usually repetitive but has some small quirks into it that makes it really catchy and sonically pleasing.

pagdating sa mga grooves idol ko si portnoy.. :)
For me Portnoy is not a groove drummer at all, maybe he can be but based on his dreamtheater performances and recordings no. He is more used to using complicated techniques and variations rather than keeping a steady pattern.

teka teka po.
let's define terms here.

ang "groove" ba na pinaguusapan naten is identical to "feel"?
what i am asking po kase is how to learn the "feel".

i agree po kay moderator akira Jumbo, portnoy is not a groove drummer.
groove drummers for me are chester thomson, vinnie colaiuta, carl albrecht, alex acuna on percussions

guys meron pa akong isang tanong, and i hope you can shed light on this.
when it comes to drumming with your bass player. kpag parehas kayong may "feel" na tinatawag, yung "feel" na yun ba is timed with a metronome?
kase i believe na yung "feel" or "groove" na tinatawag is not "technically or "precisely" on time.

ang tanong ko is, can you have the "feel" using metronome? or if you have the "feel" then useless na ang metronome?
