Vintage synth sightings in the Philippines
« on: January 26, 2007, 06:04:51 PM »
hi :D

happy stories and sad stories all is welcome...

I.

music store sa sta mesa. magbasa muna kayo before you go rushing there :P

early 90s siguro, basta gutarista pa ako nun e, so theres this store with lots of vintage guitar pedals, eh, roland etc mga boss din pero luma. i got an electro harmonix doctor q for like P900 but i didint have enough money for the P15000 analogs there.

there were quite a few rolands with knobs, some string machines etc. around 6 or 7 all in decent condition

i kept the fone number then when i had some money a few years later i called them hoping bumaba na yung presyo. pag tawag ko sabi nung tao na damage daw lahat ng synths nila sa baha :-o

II.

i checked out this tiny music store in las pinas, stall lang nga yun e. i had a tr-606 drum machine at home so when i saw a silver box with knobs akala ko 606 na naman, so i go in and  :-o its a tb-303!!!

so i check it out with guitar amp, tapos pinapangit ko tunog :D i offered P2000 with a bored look, binigay ng P2500!!!! :D

the sad part: after a year or so it broke :( it wouldnt play patterns...so tago sa baul for many years

a few years ago i needed money to get my mixer fixed for an urgent project, so i sold the 303 for parts to a guy in the netherlands for $150 :(

whithin an hour of receiving it, he got it fixed!! it was a simple capacitor or something :( :(

the mixer was a berrynger :( :( :(

OMG!!! TB-303!!!  :-o  And you sold it?! Aaaaaarrrgghhh!!!

On another note: this is an unconfirmed sighting, but a friend let on that he apparently got a vintage EP from the well known band from the 70s. I'm not saying what kind it is but it took the name of it's invertor which begins with the letter "R". I'm trying to get the time to see his studio, which also has the CZ1000. He mentioned having a Juno or 2 but they were on the fritz... now where's that Jupiter? to be continued...

wow..its nice to see people still value the 303. not very many people I know still know about the 303, 808 and 909 much less use it at all in their work. my 303 (along with an 808) was one of the very first synths I got when I started working in my teens. Needless to say, my dishwashing wages were all funneled for the sole purpose of buying basic gear and I had the hots for those two boxes. I was a fan of Techno and House when i first moved to the US and this was one of the first two boxes I used to make tracks via a Cakewalk sequencer back in the day. I had the Devil Fish mod done on it a few years later to give the 303 a bit more versatility.

Chuck, sayang na nag fritz yung 303 mo. Maybe you could have had the unit serviced in HK or maybe Japan, no? So, far my 303 has only had one repair job on it and it was the same as your problem: the programmed patterns wouldn't play although I could trigger them in realtime. I got mine repaired at a Roland-recommended service center in NY and I mailed them the unit for servicing.

yup...i still have my 303 and my 808. The sound from these machines have their purpose so you don't really end up using them on everything that you do. However, I find that making French dance type stuff sits really well with the synthetic sounding beats of the 303 and the 808 so they ahve gotten the most use for making that type of music in recent years.

the SH-101 synths still get a lot of use in the techno, trance and house genres.

@Hazel: offtopic ito pero was the magicunan song recorded using your new Fireface 800? It sounds good!

@Hazel: yeah, parang vintage ang dating...like circa early 90's E-heads albums:) It has a very early 90's OPM rock sound to it. Good work!

Ok... that does it! I hereby decree that if anyone spots any place, store, or even a person selling a vintage synth, let's post it here so that we can all rush to said area/person and haggle away. But let's not forget the secret handshake  8-) 'lest we give up too much info to the heretics...  :-D :-D :-D
