how to mic a 16" bass drum w/o a hole
« on: March 29, 2007, 11:37:21 PM »
good day sir.

i just converted my floor tom to a bass drum.
now, i'm going to use it sa mga gigs ko
but there's no hole in front to put the mic in.

what's the best way to mic my 16" bass drum?
san dapat nakalagay? o dapat ba
talaga butasan ko nalang ang reso side?

thank you.

punch a hole in it. you will get a better, tighter bass that way. also, use a thicker batter head. if you are using the same heads for bass drum duties as you were for floor tom work, the tone will be different - very different.

What i do if theres no drumhole on the bass drum is i mic'ed it in front and back of the bass drum (resonating head and batter head) with 2 SM57's for recording. For me thats the best approach so far. BUT with 16" bass drum for gigs... hmmm i dunno. may be you can also try my approach.

PEACE!

i agree, although my experience with this also involved a lot of the snare bleeding into the kick drum mic, sometimes even having phase problems with the bottom snare mic.

havent tried punching a hole on a 16" yet but here's what i do:

- use single ply heads on the drums
- i like the batter flappy and the reso side medium to loose, this gives me the click im looking for similar to RHCP's drums and less boom (a tip i learned from a fellow drummer)
- i use a samson qkick about 1" away from the center of the reso

and by the way, foot technique is more crucial than how you mic the drum. dont bury the beater on the head, it kills the sound too much
