Hi Jaco!

Guitar-wise and bass-wise, flatwound strings are pretty much one and the same - referring to a certain process the strings are made. Flatwounds have a ribbon-like winding along the core string. It's like metal fettuccini rather than spaghetti wrapped around the core, producing a more mellow sound and feel smoother and silkier under the fingers.

Like bass strings, the guitar flats are also available in a variety of gauges, ranging from .010s to either .014 or even .015s.

There's nothing wrong with what you're doing to approximate that sound. But it's still a different experience to play a properly-setup guitar with a really good set of flats, as Phil narrated.

Thanks for the inputs, Deac.  What confused me then was the fact that when a guitar player mentions "flats", more often than not you could expect the phrase "high tension" to be close by.  Tapos "high tension" normally gets associated with thicker guage strings so that's how I associated "flats" with heavy guage strings.

Hmmm, interesting.

Does your set have a wound G? .011's aren't that stiff, especially if you put them on a Gibson-scale guitar. They feel like a .010 on a fender.

Now, I just put a .014 top E on my guitar (alongside the rest of a .011-.52 set), just for kicks. I can't imagine bending that (I have small hands), although for regular non-bendy licks it's fine. Sounds nice too.

yes it's wounded.

I would disagree about the stiffness though. I have a Fender Am-Deluxe with Fender Bullit .10s in them and it's softer than the .11s in my Gibson. I can bend 1.5 note up with the .10s w/ my strat and the .11s barely at one full note....but gets easier when you go up the neck.
