quiet rock dry wall soundproof solution
« on: November 04, 2007, 02:55:47 PM »
ei guys check this out
just stumbled on it
its called THX Quiet Rock

supposedly one wall panel of this is equal to 8 walls of rockwool .. i think
see and hear for yourself

maybe its just an advertising gimick
but for those who live in apartments
and feel that they don't have hope in sound proofing
since i doubt they could make a "room within a room"
this might be a good thing to look into

supposedly it has a metal thin in the middle and polymer on both ends of the wall which convert acoustic energy into heat thus lessens or eliminates the sound

here's another sample of what it looks like
http://fresno.craigslist.org/for/467374943.html

looks pretty interesting

sir mike are you familiar with this product?
does it actually work?

Rockwool cannot be compared with gypsum or cement board like Hardiflex.  Their acoustical characteristics are totally different from one another.  Much like apples and oranges.  Rockwool absorbs sound energy (absorber); gypsum mainly reflects or stops it (stopper) from going to the other side.

The readings show that the wall is really wanting.  Housing specifications especially for multi-dwellings must be STC 55.  Their readings indicate that the walls are only STC 40.  They do not meet building specs.

Adding a piece of 1/2" gypsum on one side of a wall can bring in about 37 dBA to the wall's STC characteristics.  Putting rock wool insulation and making sure that there are no possible seepage of sound (as what they did by putting neoprene on the junction boxes, etc.) will really stop an 85 dBA sound from transferring to the other side.  It was no magic what they did.  It can be done by simply adding gypsum wallboards and sealing off all possible holes for sound to get through.

I think that Quiet whatever wallboard is just ordinary gypsum or something like Hardiflex.  The secret is in how to do the sealing and "soundproofing."

i've heard of the stuff. it seems interesting. maybe if I need to redo a room in the house, i might think about using Quiet Rock next just to further deaden any sound coming from the studio.
