Brand New Heavies (Are they still around?)
« on: February 20, 2007, 05:11:35 PM »
I love the groove of this band. We used to do covers of this band. Are they still around?
I have stated that there are more bad sounding suhrs then there are good ones.

They're still around bro, but I dont think you'll like their style these days.

The last BNH album I liked (and I still listen to it) was "Shelter" - this was when vocalist N'dea Davenport left the band and they recruited veteran Siedah Garret to replace her. This might have been their most commercial album - I think the hit here was a dance tune (well more like disco actually!) "You Are the Universe". Shelter was still funky for the most part.

I downloaded a few recent BNH tracks and they sounded like they wanted to do more dance than anything else, not my cuppa tea.

The earliest BNH recordings were more instrumental, that old time "acid jazz" feel which was heavily influenced by old-school  70's jazz-funk-fusion.

Buhayin ko lang ang thread na ito.

They're one of my influences! Aside from Incognito!

And just like Boss Jim, my fave album is "Shelter" and i can definitely say Siedah Garret is a truly good replacement of N'dea. Brother Sister is also good.

TRIVIA: The King of Pop Michael Jackson's hit "I just can't stop Loving you" was with Siedah Garret  :-D

I loved all their albums til 2003's "we won't stop". I liked how they fused Acid Jazz with Funk ala James Brown. Lately their sound kinda lean towards dance, which is quite a turn-off.

But who knows, maybe with N'dea Davenport back in tow, baka bumalik ang original groove and intensity ng Heavies, which i still believe and hope will happen  :-D

Acid jazz fans better batter up  :-D

I always remembered Parliament Syndicate covering "Never Stop"  :-D and actually does a good job!
The Cranberrie's "dreams" is a rip off of Sampaguita's "Laguna".....
