@threadstarter

Why do you want a Catalina Maple? What factors did you find attractive?

Get a peace of paper and make a list of what features/characteristics you like with the 2 kits and weigh them accordingly.

Based on your other posts I am assuming you want to get a Gretsch kit because of the recent Renown Maple snare you acquired; you want to match it with a Gretsch kit as well am I right?

If this is the case then it really boils down to you since it is all about absolute preference.

To simply answer your question though my vote goes for Pearl, I may be biased since I am a Pearl sucker, but that is if I were you.

I'd go for Pearl EXR. Ganyan na ganyan din ang kit ko dati. Limited Edition Gun Metal Sparkle yan diba? I sold mine dito din sa philmusic. Smooth ang midtones ng pearl exr. But as always, it's your decision parin. Try to compare nga sabi ni bro akira.  :-D

dear friends,

maraming salamat sa mga comments, especially sir akira who came up with the most technical and analytical approach to solve this issue.

yes i did make a list and found out the balance was between configuration and wood.

pearl got all my appreciation for config, hardware and looks (wow talaga for it)
gretsch got me simply by being made of maple and the sound of the new renown I got

I also found out that the EXR was made of poplar and here is what i found before

Poplar Liriodendron tulipifera

Color: Grayish white sapwood with greenish brown heart.

Tree: A tall, stately tree. May reach 150 feet high with a trunk up to 10 feet and free of branches for up to 90 feet.

Wood Description: Fine textured, soft and lightweight. Easily worked and takes paint exceptionally well. Frequently finished to look like other woods.

Typical Uses: Furniture.
Growth Region: Eastern USA & Canada.

So I hope I don't sound like a person with no contentment but i am really looking into having a kit na for keeps na din.

How I wish to have money to have both kits pero hehe no chance.

I am really greatful for your answers talaga

at the moment it looks like pearl is leading the race at this point

God Bless

If i where you i rather not to sell my Pearl EXR (export radical) Coz pearl has its own hardwares, and a very reliable hardwares... compare the gretch catalina maple.. they say its maple? Lets say its a maple, but it doesnt end there you have to be particular even on the hardwares... We're not talking about shells only, you have to be wise when it comes to hardwares also... Coz the true strength of the drum kit is their hardwares not by its shells.... Shells its for the tone and warm of the sound but it doesnt end there. And your Pearl EXR has a very good hardwares double brace etc... and has a logo of pearl.. what hardwares does the catalina maple have? its a gibraltar hardwares isnt it?  Have you checked the stands? Compare it first before you decide... sayang yung Pearl EXR mo kapag nagkamali ka ng choice... Or rather try TAMA drum kit it's a birch/basswood combination. hehehehe.. and it has a very good hardwares too... Roadpro series hardwares the one that they use on starclassic series... hehehehe... just a thought... but in the end still your choice....

Ung kit na yan Sir nabili sa may samash store sa may white plains, new york. Special order yan from pearl nashville, as in tinawag pa ng samash music sa pearl factory kasi nagrequest ako ng 16" floor tom, ang included kasi is 14" rack tom eh.. Tapos yun binili nya. Kaya i want you to keep it kasi sayang naman eh. Kung di lang ako bumili ng new kit bibilhin ko ulit sayo yan. Nung nasa akin di man talaga nagagamit, nakadisplay lang sa music room ko dati. =)
