 Jonathan Gonzales is a protégé of guitar master Jose Valdez. He has been touring the festival circuit and has been a National Commission for Culture and the Arts featured artist. He assembles highly competent sessionists from the music industry. Listen to the sultry sounds of Anima Chamber, composed of conservatory-trained musicians from the University of the Philippines College of Music and St. Scholastica’s College School of Music. The band combines sheer musical genius, unparalleled artistry and uncanny diversity. The result? A perfect fusion of jazz and funk rhythms topped with unique a Latin flavor. Jonathan Gonzales collaborates with session cat Edmund Chua – one of the best bass players in the music industry who includes the UST Jazz Ensemble, Sitti, and many more in his session credits. Also included are Krish Jan Pincaro – a seasoned keyboardist and composition major, and L, a student of drum guru Michael Alba and former percussionist in the Manila Symphony Orchestra who has played for Saxophoro and Salt Lake City jazz pianist Frank Yanowitz.

As of now our keyboardist is taking a short leave so we're playing as a trio. Sometimes we get to invite our friend to play on sax.

The gentlemen of the Entrepreneurial Management Program batch 2011 of the University of Asia and the Pacific is proud to present Vivid: An Odyssey of Jazz and Independent Short Films.



“Vivid” will be one-night event you can’t miss combining silent films by Filipino artists as well as Jazz Fusion. The organizers will feature independent film makers from the University of the Philippines like Sasha Palomares, Joni Guiterrez, Tey Clamor, Joaquin Pedro Valdez, and many more. Critically acclaimed Jazz artists will create a score for the films, live and on the spot. Listen and see them improvise in front of a crowd of 300 at Teatrino on October 4, 2008.



Among the notable guitar-led jazz groups to be seen and heard is Johnny Alegre of the Affinity fame—this time collaborating with World Music goddess Cynthia Alexander and the Berklee-trained Malek Lopez of the synthesizer-driven group “Drip”. They have recently formed a group called “Human Folk” and will soon release an album along with Fil-Am percussionist Susie Ibarra. Also included in the featured artists will be Jonathan Gonzales, a protégé of Jose Valdez—one of the few guitar maestros in the country. He has assembled a handful of jazz cats to back him up as he weaves original melodies in his guitar, recalling the style of guitar greats John McLaughlin and Pat Martino. “Vivid” will surely be a treat for the eyes and ears.



Jazz Fusion

Jazz originated around the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States from a confluence of African and European music traditions. On the other hand, Jazz Fusion, which emerged in the 1970s, combines jazz improvisation and chord progressions with the rhythms of rock. Generally, it is more electronic than acoustic, featuring synthesizer, electric bass, electric guitar, electronically-processed woodwind and brass instruments, and a great deal of percussion.

The rhythm section usually plays a series of syncopated repeated notes to create the groove over which other instrumentalists play the tune, improvised solos, and accompaniment figures. Jazz musicians began using rhythms or beats from soul music, rhythm and blues music, and rock music in their improvised creations. Famous jazz musicians such as Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, Jan Hammer and Chick Corea began using electronic synthesizers in their songs. Well-known fusion musicians are Miles Davis, pianist Chick Corea and guitarist Pat Metheny. Successful jazz-rock groups include Weather Report and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
