Jewel used to travel all around Alaska on a beat up Volkswagen "Hippie" Van, & would gig at coffee shops singing her own songs, playing acoustic guitar, sometimes even w/out a PA system... she was so cool, honest, a real "folk" artist... 

Then she became big, & had to wear tight jeans, show her cleavage & sway her butt just like Shakira. Her songs became commercial, MTV/Top Forty stuff... It ain't about the music anymore...

Yeah. I suppose the situation is different here in North America. Everyone I've played with here, expect some form of compensation. But in reality there is really not a lot of money to be gained playing bar gigs in here, at least talking about the eastern Canada. Playing in bars, most bands charge a minimum $100.00 for each band member a night. Wedding gigs are more lucrative. The most I got paid in here for a bar gig was during St. Patrick's Day, playing Celtic music. I made $250 for 3 sets in 3 hours.

i guess i get paid din. sort of like beer money din pero beer mismo. i cant remember the last time i paid for my beer. to be fair though, thats cheap din kasi i'm not really much of a drinker.

sometimes i drive home thinking the bars and organizers must hate us. they're probably doing their books at the end of an event going, "kanino 'tong 1k (sometimes more) beer bill?!?!"

sobra. ganito lang naman eh. it's your music, why compromise with equipment that you feel s***ty about? another plus factor about this is that we get respect from our fellow musicians because we bust our ass working day jobs and we really place in funds for our gear.
