If Elroy Jetson grew up to be a snotty teenager, he would’ve formed a punk band and named it after himself. However, beating him to the idea with break-neck speed was vocalist Conrad Javier, who along with drummer JT Flameño, already had plans of putting up a band as early as high school. The band Boy Elroy materialized some time 2002 when most of them were struggling through college at the Ateneo de Manila. Conrad and JT recruited Cebu rocker Gino Rosales (Slinky & Blind Man’s Bluff) and Darren de Jesus (Ziplok) to do guitar work, plus original member Francis Peña on bass.
With even more break-neck speed, the band recorded a six-song EP under Tower of Doom records the very same year they had formed. The song “All Right” from the EP gained some airplay over at NU 107, while the tunes “Timex”, “Over You”, and “Post-it” became crowd staples at their gigs. Several line-up changes ensued with Francis leaving due to priority schedules in January 2004. Ably filling-in the bass void was Fil Viernes (Wild Moodswings). After recording their debut full-length album “A Better Place”, original guitarist Darren de Jesus left to persue law studies, but Joey Santos (Hopskotch) gladly filled-in his shoes.
Now with a revamped line-up and a new album, the Boys continue to gig and propel to their audiences their brash brand of punk rock. The album “A Better Place boasts of several youthful anthems like “Eksena” and the title track “A Better Place”. You could also hear some jazzy tinges on “Just Like Yesterday”. The Boys also pay homage to 90s punk-ska band Tungaw by covering their popular B-side “Ewan Ko”. After listening to their album “A Better Place”, the sounds of various punk bands come to mind like The Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Rancid, Greenday, Offspring, and the Descendents. That’s probably why some have come to describe their punk sound as “not quite old school, but not quite new school”.
