Help in removing static in recordings
« on: December 09, 2009, 10:18:11 AM »
Good Day to everyone

I am having a hard time removing static in my recordings. What effects or things should I do/use to make the static go away.. Btw I use audacity, mixcraft and wavepad in editing  :-D

Why is there static to begin with? I think you should fix that first. If you are using audacity, it has a click and noise removal tool in the effects menu.

Or load up waves in audacity and run XNoise or X-Crackle.

But yeah BosKit is right. Is the static already in a recording or is it in your system (there's static even while you're not recording) then you gotta fix that first or it will hound you for the rest of your recording life.

Ako din. Static problems, even when not recording (unarmed)

Guitar > Line6 UX1 > Computer > Gearbox > Sonar > Monitor Speakers

Only the recording software is installed on the computer. I've tried changing wires, but to no effect. Since the UX1 operates on a USB, does this have an effect to the input signals?

is the static recorded?  if not, the problem might be in your monitoring system.

Change your buffer/latency settings. It might be too low for your computer to handle..

you probably are using a 2-channel usb interface (like behringer uca202/200) and the converters are noisy. line 6 ux1 is noisy too.

Yeah, I'm guessing it's the UX1 itself with the Gearbox. Even on a clean tone, the static gets amplified. If it's the UX1 then I'm guessing there's no workaround on this (or is there? except to sell of course)

@KitC – I'll try adjusting the buffer/latency, then figure out the comparisons.

@starfugger – Yes. it's still being recorded. Gearbox' noise cancellation ability doesn't work at all.

this could indicate a problem with the usb bus itself. try turning off your power saving features. if you have a powered hub, try connecting the ux1 there; it's possible that the usb port isn't providing enough current to the device. Do not attach other audio devices and 'high power draw' peripherals (like usb drives) to the hub while doing audio, though.

try using Behringer's Denoiser on the output of your preamp before it goes to the DAW...

Easy on that. It has a way of 'coloring' the sound.

I suggest killing the source of the noise rather than curing it. Sa tingin ko, Mas ok siguro kung malaman ng TS kung san galing yung ingay kesa sa kung paano niya tatanggalin yung ingay sa track. Baka may kailangan siyang palitan sa chain. Bago pa maging complicated lalo.

Ha! Back in the day when I was transferring vinyl to CD, I had to draw out clicks, pops, and other anomalies because the click detection algorithm wouldn't remove all of them. I would use the pencil tool to literally draw the click away. Now it's easier, but it still colors the sound if you overdo it.

true Kit, x-noise works pretty well though.  it WILL change the overall tone of the sound, that's a given.  if you're willing to compromise your sound for cleaner tracks then it just might do the job.  izotope also released RX which they say even removes clipping. i haven't tried it yet.

try not to overdo noise reduction in order to stay closer to the original tone  :)

Please make sure that all hardware is in proper condition, kasi static shouldn't be there in the first place. Or if you have noisy preamps or AD/DA converters, noise cancellation lang talaga fix dyan (as explained above) OR GAS-up for a better preamp or converter  :-D.
