Jazz Playlist
« on: May 15, 2008, 03:20:36 PM »
After learning the guitar and basic jazz concepts, (I think) I am ready to build a jazz song repertoire. Do you have any nice songs to learn?  :-D

Wag muna instrumentals, or songs that originated as instrumentals (eg. take five, hehe  :-)) - mahirap kapag isang guitara ka lang, mauubos oras ko sa pagaaral.

What I want is to build my repertoire (para makapag-gig naman).  :-D

These are the songs I know (but ALWAYS subject to improvement  :-D):
Someone to Watch
Fly me to the Moon
Nearness of You
Blue Moon
The Way You Look Tonight
The Look of Love
Time after time (not the Cyndi Lauper version)
Let's fall in love
Moon river

Currently Learning:
They can't take that away from me

What I wish to learn:
Cheek to Cheek
That's All
Summertime
Autumn Leaves
Cry me a River

I also know these more modern songs:
Moody's mood
This Masquerade
Let's stay together

Anything you (Jazz players) think I should add (the more likely to be requested in a Jazz set)? Or to jazz up more modern songs (na bagay naman ha - or pwede rin some Incognito songs - I'm learning rin Still a Friend of Mine)?  :-D

Thanks in advance!

play 'i'll remember april' in all keys, you'll cover almost all the most used standard changes. madali pa, siguradong gagana ang ears mo, much better than playing difficult tunes for 10 years and still can't play it right hehehee :-D

the blues progression, from the basic 3 chord form to the more complicated chordal substitutions... a LOT of jazz tunes and standards are based on this progression...

tunes in a major and minor blues progression and tunes having rhythm changes progression are REALLY important! you gotta have the blues man!

wala yata akong nakitang charlie parker tunes sa repertoire mo man? maybe start with billie's bounce (jazz blues prog) and moose the moosche (CP's drug dealer :-D ,rhythm changes prog)

sa minor blues maybe start with coltranes tunes, mr. pc, equinox etc.

Actually I'm building more on those standard songs - with words (or at least originally with words.)  :-D Next time na yung mga jazz songs from Parker, or Coltrane, buo muna ako ng jazz rep with a vocalist...  :-D

Sorry, I know quite a number of progressions narin - usually nga they are all the same - so I'm not sure what you're talking about, or if I already know them... :)

Can you tell it here? Or do you have a link/document that I can look through to check them out?

Thanks!

hi rj, dont know if you already know this, but ill just expound further. what i meant was by using the basic 3 chord blues form, you can twist it enough to produce more "jazzier" changes....

from the top of my head, say in a typical Bb Blues, 1-4-5

Bb7/Bb7/Bb7/Bb7
Eb7/Eb7/Bb7/Bb7
F7/Eb7/Bb7/Bb7

you can add the minor 2nd forming a ii-v

Bb7/Bb7/Bb7/Fm7-Bb7/
Eb7/Eb7/Bb7/Bb7/
Cm7/F7/Bb7/Bb7

there are other chordal subs pero i wont elaborate na baka maging booking masyado
...
 like adding

1-6-2-5's
diminished chords
tritones

as mentioned by william, a lot of coltrane, parker, as well as joe henderson, and wayne shorter and even modern wild east coast tunes are based on the blues...

hope this helps,

Question: Jazz blues is the Route 66 changes right? What's the minor blues?

Thanks all!

haha, you can't imagine how many i have - i have like 3 fakebook versions of summertime and cheek to cheek.. pero most of the songs have the same version. I need to know what's better to study first. Baka mamaya I decide to learn something that only a few really knows.  :-D

But right now this is not really my issue anymore...

but finding a willing jazz group.

 :-D
