HELP: Clicking/Popping sounds while playing back audio
« on: September 11, 2010, 04:56:15 AM »
Hi!

I've been hearing subtle clicking/popping noise while playing back audio (even Youtube videos) on my Wharfedale Diamond Studio 8.1 ProActive monitors.

I'm using 3 Mackie Onyx 400F Preamp FireWire Interface connected to an Intel Core 2 Quad with 3gig of RAM.

What could be the problem? Please help.

Thanks!

Hi peeves24!

Thanks for the response. I've already tried setting the buffer of the Asio to maximum (2048 samples) but still, there's popping noise while playing back audio.
Any other suggestions in mind?

What about firewire connectivity? Is your Onyx daisychained to other firewire devices or directly connected to the mobo firewire? the reason I asked for detailed info is because knowing even what model of mobo you have is important. Identifying the chipset helps determine possible hardware conflicts. Even having a relatively powerful video card has been known to cause havoc with DAWs.

The 3 Onyx are directly connected to the computer, not daisy chained.

The Asus P5Q uses the Intel G45 chipset which means you are using onboard graphics which usually have issues with audio. Look for potential IRQ conflicts using Device Manager > View by connections, then expand the IRQ tree. See if the graphics conflicts (or shares an IRQ) with the onboard firewire. If it does, you might have to get a separate video card, or even a different OS!  :|

you might also want to read up on this:

Is it better to daisy chain the interface? And should I turn on the computer first before the interface or the other way around?

Here's the IRQ Tree:

Looks plausible... there's a big question mark where there shouldn't be one. Also unusual is that I don't see the SATA controller (your mobo has 6 sata). Did you install the mobo drivers at all? Try to update the drivers and, in some cases, bios.

Is it better to daisychain? I think it's better not to, although firewire is more tolerant of this.

Ha! don't get me started with the IRQ tables in vista.  I'm still bummed out that my Win7 drive died and went to hard disk heaven, with very little hope of data recovery.
