Pinch Harmonics on 24.75" scale and 25.5" scale
« on: October 27, 2012, 01:38:18 PM »
Do they really have difference in terms of the difficulty of producing them when using different scales? I find that it's easier to produce pinch harmonics on 24.75" scale than the 25.5" scale. I've done this on several 24.75" and 25.5" guitars recently and all of my findings are the same. Is there a theory behind this or is this just a mere setup problem?

i find it the same on a les paul (24.75), a strat (25.5) and a PRS (25), even on cleans..

but on distortion it'd be more pronounced with a humbucker than a strat on single coils on a same distortion settings imo

maybe ive come to a point where i see no difference with them except the way they sound

Since we are on the subject of pinch harmonics, may difference ba talaga ang neck pickup na nakadikit na sa end of neck ng isang 24-fret guitar as against sa isa na hindi? I heard Satriani prefers this. Wala bang effect sa pitch produced or additional overtones lang?

Not on fretboard scale length but on type and selection of pickups. I find it easier to produce pinch harmonics using humbuckers rather than single coils. Also pickups nearer the bridge can produce pinch harmonics easier rather than near the neck.

i think yung sa pickups being closer to the neck is because mas "warm" raw and sound. thats why some prefer 22 fret guitar than 24 fret ones..

parang mas mabiliis at buo yung pinch harmonics on shorter scaled guitars... i think dahil less tension and wider yung movement ng strings.

Mas madali din iproduce IMO. The sound it produces on a single coil or humbucker is not my concern actually. It's more of the difficulty of producing it given on a different-scaled guitar. Hope more could chime in.

I find it easy to produce on a longer scale neck probably because i have reference locations on where i should hit it. Pag two humbuckers and short scale kailangang tantsahan for the octave harmonic. Sanayan lang siguro as i rarely have access to short scaled guitars.

did you also consider the action difference?

From experience:

Easier on a 24.75 than on a 25.5 on same string gauge

Easier on gauge 9's than on gauge 11's on same scale length

Therefore easier on loose strings? I'm still not 100%.

Don't know if this helps explain things..

My 24.75's action is slightly lower than the 25.5. Both have 10's, both tuned to drop C. Easier to produce pinch harmonics on the 24.75.

We cannot safely say that the lower the action, the easier to produce the pinch harmonic. Lowering the action compromises tone.

ako pag malambot ang strings, madali lang mag pinch, compared sa matitigas ang strings na electric guitar...and tantiya na lang din kung san mo ipipinch...in my experience sa guitar ko, madalas nakukuha ko siya in between neck and mid pickups....sa pickups naman, mas madali ako maka pinch pag bridge gamit ko,, pag nag neck kasi ako tumataba ung tunog niya...mahirap ipinch yun lalo na mababa ang gain...

I think we should set aside the technical aspects like the amp settings, gain, pickups, technique even, etc. You can still hear the pinch harmonics naman even when unplugged. Di ko alam bakit mas madali mag pinch harmonics sa 24.75 compared sa 25.5 scale as to my experience. Try niyo unplugged. Need to bust this myth. lulz
