USB external sound cards and computer recording
« on: December 13, 2006, 08:01:37 AM »

Parang may clipping. Kung recta naman ako sa PCI sound card ko eh OK naman. Already tried 2 USB soundcards pero ganun pa rin.

Do you think yung USB port ko ang may problem? But I already tried all 4 ports.

What am I missing here?

usb has latency. try a soundcard with a breakoutbox such as an M-Audio delta series( 44, 66 or 1010). Pci cards yun. Less or zero latency. for more info about recording, please go here: http://talk.philmusic.com/board/index.php/board,74.0.html

your sound input signal is clipping. read more on recording with digital media to know the Do's and Don'ts of the methodology. Ideally, your input VU meters should peak nowhere near digital 0db, otherwise, you are going to get a ton of noise. Check the Windows audio input as well.

I'm using  a Tascam US-122 with ASIO drivers so latency should not be my problem. You can control in the input level from this device and I have set it to something really low.
Thanks for the responses.

Aba! Tascam pala! Si Phil ang master ng Tascam! ei Phil!

Btw, anong signal chain mo? Remember, line level ang inputs ng US122, switchable to guitar level; baka naka-set to guitar level ang input pero line level naman ang output ng previous device mo. FYI lang, latency shouldn't matter a lot kung usb o pci ang soundcard, nasa drivers yun. Kung maganda design ng soundcard (may direct monitoring), latency should all be eliminated. Try setting to the lowest latency settings ng capable ng computer mo.

Pareng Phil! Anong mas magandang drivers para sa Tascam? WDM o ASIO?

DO NOT FEAR I AM HERE. KitC called me using our telechanesis super wachomacallit communication device.

Anyway......yes I've been using TASCAM sa mga recordings ko....2 years na ata. (which reminds me to upgrade)....but I'm very bad when it comes to computers...computer illiterate ako. I do know how to type.

Okay...what exactly are you doing or want to do?

KitC is right though....about the guitar and mic line selector switch...and everything else(of course)...wait...I use WDM with excellent results. BTW I use Sonar 3 PE, Sonar 4 PE, and Sonar 6 PE

Bale ganito:

guitar --> G7.1UT (cab sim engaged and switch set to -10dB)--> Tascam US-122 (set to guitar level)

Mali ba?

Since you're clipping at guitar level, try line level next time.

Btw, it's a line level output on the G7, so set the Tascam to line level, -10 dBm settings. Experiment with either ASIO or WDM drivers and see where you can get lower latency figures. For example, my Emu 1820 bottoms out at 10 ms when using WDM pero kapag ASIO gamit ko, I can achieve latencies as low as 2 ms. It all depends on the card's drivers.

im using a soundblaster extigy..ok naman, not noticeable yung latency compared to the on-board soundcard ng PC ko, which sux!
the extigy im using is an old one, USB 1.1 pa sya...ok naman for home use.

Fixed the problem by putting the Tascam switch into line level mode. My recordings are so much better now.
Thanks for the suggestion!
