OpenSource Anyone?
« on: January 09, 2009, 01:05:15 AM »
Last year around October I completely replaced my windowsxp with Ubuntu Linux 8.10

Nung una hirap na hirap akong iayos yung mga files and other programs na nkasanayan ko na, I tried other distro like bayanihan and opensuse but went back to Ubuntu. At one time I had to re-install xp kasi I was having problems burning audio and video disk. After doing it all over again. It kinda grew on me and finally decided to stick with Ubuntu 8.10.

I can burn cd's na uli and recording is great.

Yung MP3, you have to insatll through synaptic package manager. oks naman, kasi parang halos lahat ng kailangan mo legally downloadable, and kung merong mga proprietary na softwares meron ding work around.

I hope yung bayanihan linux would improve. debian based na kasi yung release 4.0 kaya baka mejo promising.

xubuntu/ubuntu user here. dati mandrake gamit ko pero mas madali kasi gamitin xubuntu/ubuntu e. :-D

@ farleysbeat - thanks. Bangis naman ng gamit mo sa Linux! I have to learn those too.  :-D

Dun sa dating trabaho ni esmi, they shifted to fedora, kasi puro pirated nuon ang pc's nila, madaming umangal, sadly kasi parang ayaw nilang pag-aralan or intimidating sa kanila. Ayun they had an x-deal with a company para maging liscenced yung windows-xp nila.

Some of my son's friends came to our house one weekend and played games on our ubuntu box. one of them asked "Yan ba yung Vista?" my son said "Ubuntu Linux yan!" his friend replied "niloloko mo yata ako eh"

haaaay! I'm not telling to get rid of windows but to stop using pirated softwares.

Fedora User here.. web applications developer kasi ako so the linux environment is easier to deal with for me..

Music/Recording:
Ok din na music platform ang linux, been using it with open source apps such as Ardour, Hydrogen, Rakkarak, RoseGarden, Jack to mix down some track samples > http://www.myspace.com/arpeeong

Gaming:
Hindi ako masyado sa games.. but one FPS game I like that runs seamlessly with linux is OpenArena..

Distros:
Ubuntu would be good for the general audience.. kung mejo hardcore you can try and be comfortable with RPM-based distros like fedora etc.. ok din ung *nix-based systems like Solaris and BSD variants..

@istipen: try mo ung kdewebdev package dude.. meron dung Kdevelop C/C++, ok din sya contains all the standard features.. assistant, syntax highlighting, code completion etc.. personally i just use kate.. magaan sya and can manage sessions (batch open files), un nga lang hnd sya full blown IDE.. text editor lang talaga but comes with syntax highlighting and a few more handy plugins for dev't

thanks. :-) but i'm sure there are other people here who are more hardcore when it comes to programming than I. ako madalas kinukuha ko lang sa net yung snippets, modify then use in my own apps. ayoko ko kasi mag-"reinventing the wheel" na ground-up programming. tsaka pwede sa akin yun kasi more on scientific research ginagawa ko at hindi commercial apps.

@ sir Arpee Ong:

nice suggestion sa music related software. :-)

@ all:

Hi,

+ 1 Linux User here.

I'm currently using RHEL 5 but in virtualization mode (VMWare Workstation).
My primary OS though is Windows Vista.

I have also tried using Fedora & Ubuntu.  They are really good distro's.
But since I'm exploring all the services (apache, dns, mail... etc,etc...) I choose to go for RHEL.

Thanks.

Peace.  :-D

ito kakadiskubre ko lang:

word processor:
http://www.abisource.com/

spread sheet:
http://www.gnome.org/gnumeric

:-) mas nagustuhan ko kasi mas mabilis at onting space lang nakukuha. i'm running 'em on my ibm x21. however, if you've got a relatively new machine with big storage and running capabilities, i think OpenOffice (which i run on my pc desktop and my toshiba satellite) is still the way to go.

@farleysbeat.. oo nga e, sa java kasi kaya mabagal.. try mo din ung google docs.. may word processor din sya and spreadsheet (pati presentation ala powerpoint), its browser-based though and you have to save your files online (or export them for local storage), pwede ka din import dun ng existing xls, doc, odt etc.. files.. although hnd open source ung google docs, still its a good free alternative..

@istipen .. if you're looking for a gui (ala Macromedia/Adobe Flash) to produce swf files from opensource, mejo madalang and hnd pa fully developed. however may mga open source libraries/assets you can use for your flash projects..  all further info can be found here > http://osflash.org/
