Strat Necks from China...are they good?
« on: August 06, 2014, 02:53:00 PM »
Hi to all.

If I plan to replace a rosewood neck with an all maple neck and I have budget restrictions, are those China-made strat necks (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replacement-Maple-Neck-Fingerboard-for-Fender-Strat-Stratocaster-Electric-Guitar-/161387284732?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item25936e88fc
) good?

Daming tanung hehe, hope to have answers from you experts ^_^ Thanks.

Not an expert here pero hanapin mo si STRATOSPHERE sa ebay, madami syang necks for strat, bnew and used. MIA is compatible with MIMs in terms sa body and neck, not sure with MIC.

Those are 'raw' replacements, so you need to dress the frets and slot/cut the nut according to your string size.

I've heard lots of good reviews on these necks... http://www.eyguitarmusic.com/Stratocaster-Necks_c_53.html and http://www.eyguitarmusic.com/Telecaster-Necks_c_54.html

...the headstock looks a bit off though esp. on tele. wish they made it bigger so user can route it to Fender specs

These cheap Chinese-made necks typically require a LOT of work done on them before they can be playable -- work which most people can't do on their own. And that is assuming the dimensions and spacings are correct and the truss rod is functional.

Thanks for your reply and to all other replies.

So, will it be better if I go to alternatives like buying off from allparts.com or warmoth.com? Will these items require me less work?

^ ditto. Musikraft/ Warmoth/ All Parts/ KNE are some of the brands I recommend using.. though KNE needs a little bit of routing work

The companies you mentioned sell necks that are far superior than the cheap Chinese-made ones. But even they won't assure you of a hassle-free process.

For example, I ordered a Vintage Modern (or is it the other way around...) neck from Warmoth. Granted, I only applied a tung oil finish over the factory-applied sealer, but it took years before the neck fully stabilized and got acclimated to the tropical weather here in the Philippines.

That's why, right now, if I were to build a new partscaster, I'd seriously consider having a neck made by MicSis rather than have a neck shipped from a temperate and less humid country. (On the other hand, I almost ordered a neck from byoguitars.com last summer, lol....)
