bronze or brass?
« on: April 10, 2007, 04:27:40 PM »

bibili na sana ako. kaya lang naisip kong magtanong muna. based sa expert and experienced drummer boy(s) out there.

please help.

sa 2nd hand, may magandang mura kung talagang nangangailangan yung nagbebenta (exception to the rule) pero bukod dun, the general rule still applies

I started drumming with 3-pc Planet Z's (came with my LA drumset) to keep time and accent my initially crude beats. Yeah, brass sila, but for me, the 18" Crash Ride was bright and cutting for a Crash, yet had enough ping on the bell to fulfill the Ride role! The hi-hats? Utter crap. Hehe. Then I bought Sir Dennis' 14" Zildjian Scimitars and a dozen or so gigs later, they're still intact with neither keyhole nor crack! Yeah, I envy the Avedis Rock and New Beat hi-hats na nasa studio drumkits, pero I'm still a college student with no steady source of income, so pagtipid lang ng allowance ang pang-GAS ko.

A few months later, I wanted a RIDE. I couldn't afford a Toyota Fortuner, nor a Camry, nor a Mazda 3. So I once again settled for Sir Dennis' 20" Zildjian Scimitar Ride. Sige, sheet bronze nanaman. Low-end, sasabihin ng iba. Pero I liked the bell sound so much that I gigged with it. So eto na ko, with my Scimitar Hats, Planet Z Crash-Ride for a Crash, and Scimitar Ride. I gig with these babies, and like their sound so much that sometimes I replace Edges, Amirs, Paistes, and Z-Customs (too noisy for me) on bar drumkits with my own cymbals! (Kaso ibang usapan na pag Avedis, A custom, K's at K Constantinople na yung nakalagay. Minsan lang makagamit nun! Hehe!) So far, my band members and friends among the audience don't complain that my cymbals sound weird or "tunog-lata", so I guess my current cymbal setup isn't necessarily bad. There's plenty of room for upgrade, but til I get money to GAS, I'm sticking with my metals. 8-)

Ang haba ng kuwento ko. The moral lesson I learned? Brass, Sheet Bronze, Cast Bronze, Nickel-Silver - they're priced accordingly for a reason. Pero it still boils down to the sound YOU like, and what YOU think suits you and the type of music you play. So what kung Sabian B8 (hehe, para di sabihing biased ako sa Big Z) lang ang gamit mo? If it sounds good to you and your band, then don't force a Z custom into your setup dahil lang mahal siya and Cast Bronze. Our ears are still the judge. PEACE! :-D

Pag mas mahal ba mas maganda? maybe? maybe not... I find the entry level cymbals of paiste quite nice... I have Paiste 101, 402, 502, PST3 and PST5 on my kit and except for the 101, I'm very satisfied with their sound... pero syempre iba parin pag ung Paiste sig and 2002... when I have those I'll be Extremely ehem... EXTREMELY satisfied! ahahahahahahhaa!

ehem... back to the topic... I like bronze better... coz their darker... well it's all in your preferences... go with what your ears like the most... kahit ung mga century or regal... kung maganda sa pandinig mo or creative ka na nakakagawa ka ng new unique sounds then go for it! wala naman tama at mali pagdating dun eh... I like bronze coz I play reggae and darker cymbals are perfect for that genre...

so to sum up what I've said... IT'S UP TO YOU!

well this is debatable  :-D and from my own experience...

i used to think its as simple as "base your decision on the music you intend to create". our ears do know what sounds good for us but it doesnt mean that the listeners will like our sound choices. it does hurt band performance and reputation if people dont want to listen to you or get annoyed by you. in the context of cymbals, you do need good sounding ones to help improve your music.

i bought saluda cymbals (cheap b20 cymbals) without hearing them though i really really liked how they sound but my bandmates, sound engineers and audience do not appreciate them. i sold all of my high end sabians/zildjians thinking i got a better deal but now im purchasing sabians again for gig use. i'll keep my saludas for practice, sabians go to gigs.

this is a from gear perspective assuming the player is constant, there is still the argument of "tone is in the player" but that's for another thread  :-D

para skin naman,i always gig and record with my own gear cause i liked the sound and im inspired and play the way i play when i used them. ewan ko lng sa iba ha,para sken kasi personal un eh. parang i wont let other people to tell me what cymbals or snare to used. depende cguro kung recording and a producer is looking for a particular sound. o sa tingin mo mas bagay ang isang klase ng ride, hats etc sa ibang kanta. i dont know if other people like the sound of my gears but what the heck. i always saw gadd play the same set of hats and ride,im not a fan of his ride sound. but i still listen to him. lot of people diss bill stewarts new dry complex ride and prefer his old ks. but i dont think they will stop listening to him. ewan ko ha,pero alam nyo ung filing pag memorize mo na gears mo na uy alam ko 2nog ng crash na to mya hatawin kta,o kaw isang crash ko d ka bagay ngaun maya na kta hatawin sa ending! haha, kung pwede lang buong drums lagi ko dalin gagawin ko eh. i once read vinnie said that hes not comfortable when his not playing his own drums and cymbals kasi he hears a certain sound.my point is,if you have brass cymbals and love the sound then play it and have fun. sori mga tsong weird ba? peace! bro peeves dipa kta narinig o nakita.pero kahit ano cymbals gamit il enjoy your playing

this is just my two cents...

brass are much cheaper coz this are much cheaper materials than bronze..and this are intended for the beginners or student lines without breaking budget that much...well just dont expect anything special from it

hi-ends like the casted cymbals or the manually hand hammered cymblas are expensive because it takes much labor and craftmanship to create this cymbals..and of course the materials used and processing are much expensive...well this are just some points of view ive learned during my training with the sabian camp at the NAMM Show

well i think the bottomline is "you get what you pay for"

hope that helps

Since sound preference is subjective, brass and bronze are unique in terms of whatever kind of sound they produce.  Kunyari, I sometimes prefer the sound of a broken Planet Z ride to a K Custom Medium... pero wala lang, dahil lang in the mood ako for a trashy-sounding ride. Sa bahay lang naman eh :D

But volume is objective, and that's where these to differ: Bronze cymbals are louder than brass cymbals.  This contributes to clarity... and the more sound you can hear, the more sound you can possibly manipulate. This, in turn contributes to the possibility of making a multitude of sounds that one can make with bronze as compared to brass.

Also, bronze cymbals can be made more durable than brass cymbals.
