Rosen-who? ...  :)

Of course, me likey!..

First heard him through his 'East Coast Love Affair' album.

I've always thought he used an ES-175 type jazzbox for that, but I was surprised to read an article that said he used a Yamaha SA 335 copy for that..

Definitely one of the newer generation jazz guitar cats to watch out for, along with Wolfgang Muthspiel and psychic_sushi ..  :)

major rosenwinkel fan din ako.. the baddest guitar player for me to come out of the jazz scene since metheny  :)

almost all his albums and collaborations are mind blowing

east coast love affair- my favorite guitar trio album, reminds me of some jarrett/dejohnette/peacock albums ( incidentally he lists jarrett as one as of his major influences

intuit - played the best versions of some well known bop/standard tunes.. shows that he can swing with the best of them when he wants to

the next step - arguably the most revolutionary album in jazz guitar, after that almost all most guitar players esp in NY tried to copy his sound. He can really play the piano as any seasoned NY jazz player too.. check out the title track, the next step

deep song - this album has a lot of tricky changes especially the tune synthetics. Notice the difference when he played over it in deep song as opposed to version he did in the enemies of energy album

and of course, his collabs with mark turner, joshua redman, brad mehldau, seamus blake and chris potter are some of the finest representations of modern jazz

cant wait for the new kurt rosenwinkel village vanguard live album

i got to hear teasers of his work with seamus blake, amazing stuff!

same with the mehldau and redman (who i totally dig!) stuff.

rosenwinkel is scary indeed... what i would give to have that harmonic facility... its complex but friendly to the ears. maybe complex is not the word, sophisticated but digestable...

like perfectly bbq-ed steak flanked with  mushroom gravy, mint jellied peas and mashed potatoes with cream... its simple but with extra ingredients that make it special... :)

mismo c rosenwinkel talaga..

from what i have gathered, after spending quite a number of listening hours to rosenwinkel.. he uses these concepts a lot

1. the 3 tonic system ( 3 keys, a major third apart) when going outside

2. triads, triads triads... he's really into triads and upper extensions

3. intervals of fourths, fifths and seconds

4. he plays and improvises like a piano player, mixing comping and single note lines as well as any piano player

5. his chords are mostly based on parallel harmonies

6. he constructs chords based on fourths, fifths and seconds as well

check out his website for more info.. may forum din dun where rosenwinkel often corresponds

This thread got me curious. I saw Mr. Metheney play and man, he's one bad and mean guitar player! Mr. Rosenwinkel? This I gotta hear!  8)

thanks glad to help.. actually what's he is playing comes mostly from pianistic and horn influences (coltrane and shorter)..ive been listening to kurt for 4 years na and everytime i hear him playing those lines, parang ayaw ko na tumugtog.. ang hirap sabayan especially those tricky changes.. very fresh and original...

also noteworthy are jesse van ruller, jonathan kreisberg, adam rogers and my current favorite Lage Lund... pero syempre for me, no one can touch rosenwinkel... except maybe metheny (check out his collaboration with Burton, Corea, Haynes, ... "Like Minds"...  :)

i like his standard renditions... his lines are complex, but not-too 'out', it's easy to appreciate! i love his 'lazy bird' standard rendition!

Minsan po'y naiisip ko pong mas fino si Wolfgang Muthspiel. Medyo magkahawig po silang dalawa ni Rosenwinkel pero tila po yata'y mas fino si Muthspiel. Sa phrasing, sa note choices, sa touch.

But then, of course, in the landscape of spring, some branches are long and some are short.

=)

Yes, the three tonic system. Been shedding that sh_t myself a lot lately. Tricky to speak it fluently. But will get there eventually. As God wills. =)

Rhhhhhhhaaaaaaaakkkkkkkkk ennnnnnnnn rhooooooooooollllllll!!!

yup, muthspiel's lines are much more refined, smoother, much brighter (much like metheny).. rosenwinkel has a more sharper, aggresive, edgier, darker attack.. but IMO, on a blindfold test rosenwinkel and muthspiel cant be confused from one another..  :-D

lage lund, on the other hand, is much more similar to rosenwinkel..
