If you are going to record guitars, I think the UX2 will be much better since it also comes with Line6's simulations. (Thank God it's not a POD, or we might hit 20 pages by this time tomorrow    )
Sonar 4.04PE/5.2PE/7.02PE/8.31 PE, Project 5 v2.5.1, EmulatorX 1.5, Cubase SL2, Ableton Live 7.14,  Intel Q6600 MSI P43 Neo 4Gb Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2-800, Emu 1820m, Yamaha DSP Factory, Terratec DMX 6fire

As much as I like my Emu 1820m, their usb interfaces don't seem too hot for me. The biggest issue I've been reading about is their inability to use WDM and ASIO simultaneously, a deal killer if you've gotten used to their pci interfaces. One thing to check for would be your usb chipset. We've been encountering some chipset issues (as well as some other operating issues) over at the Unofficial Emu forums (productionforums.com) where I moderate as well.

as far as creating fine demos for with complete insturmentation (guitars, bass, drums, vocals), is the UX2 together with its SW, enough?

Not to be bias, but I love my UX1. Not as much different to the UX2 when it comes the the quality of recording (i think). Great buy IMO.
