The Paleo-Camera theory
« on: July 21, 2008, 12:47:32 PM »
hey guys, i just wanted to share something.  my batchmates met-up with our former photography prof Matt Gatton over the weekend.  We haven't seen him for years so it was uber cool to finally see him again. anyways a little backgrounder:

Matt Gatton is a multi-media artist with a B.A. cum laude from the University of Louisville and an M.F.A. from the University of the Philippines. He has held adjunct positions at the University of Louisville and De La Salle University and is an artist-in-residence at St. Francis High School in Louisville, USA.

moving on... he presented this awesome and highly plausible theory about the Paleo-Camera... in a nutshell... it basically tackles on how the Camera Obscura could have made an impact on pre-historic life.  what's a camera obscura?

A camera obscura is nothing more than a dark chamber (of any size) with a hole in one side. Outside the chamber, light reflects off an object in all directions. Some light travels through the hole, projecting an upside-down image onto the interior surfaces of the chamber.

...a pinhole camera as most know it.

anyways... he is currently writing a book about it... but he presents his theory in his website... it's totally awesome and the impact this theory would have in the art world would be tremendous for sure...

drop by the website to learn more about it. it's a totally awesome read:
